Photographing flowers at the Blue Lotus Water Gardens

Last weekend I had an opportunity to go to the Blue Lotus Water Gardens at Yarra Junction and enjoyed photographing flowers there. It is a garden full of waterlilies, and there are a lot. It is a place that I recently only found out about.

Blue Lotus Water Gardens

It isn’t a great place for a macro lens as you can’t always get that close to them. Now that my 70-300mm is no longer working, I had to use my 80-200mm. It was okay, but the extra 100mm would have been better. The other problem I had is that you can’t get very close with the Nikon 80-200mm. I am looking for a new lens, but so far haven’t settled on anything.

The gardens are very large and there are a lot of flowers. We didn’t get all the way around as it looked like rain, and it did rain. That just means we will have to go back and see the rest, hopefully after I get a new lens.

Photographing flowers other than Waterlilies

There are a lot more than just waterlilies, and scattered through the gardens you will find lots of other flowers, and lots of colour. There are some great bridges over the water as well. Take it all in.

It is only open a few months of the year, so you need to watch out for the times. It also gets very busy, so go early as you want to get there before the busloads of tourists. The cafe is nice, but I think if I went back I would look for somewhere else to eat.

It was an interesting place to go and take photos. Waterlilies are beautiful and who knew there were so many different types?

    1. I’m so glad Elen, I’ve been hearing about the cold there. I hope you are keeping warm. We have been getting a lot of heat, so to the other extreme. Thank you and happy new year to you too.

  1. Hello Leanne,
I was looking back through some of my blog posts from 2015 and saw that you liked some of my photographs. Thank you for that and viewing my blog post. I looked at your photographs and equipment details listed on your website. I saw that the Composer Pro lens has an extension space between the base of the lens and the outer rim of the lens. I watched an example video of someone using this lens and would like to clarify if it provides a higher depth of field( from top to bottom(viewing through the lens and the printed photograph) compared to a 35 or 55mm lens. I honestly did not see that much of a difference in the examples I cam across.

Thank you for sharing your artwork and time.

    Sincerely,
    Sam Sutlive

    1. You’re welcome. the Composer Pro works very definitely to any other type of lens and you don’t get the same depth of field as a normal lens, so it is hard to compare it that way. The advantage is being able to change your point of focus in a different way.

  2. I love the water lily, they are such a beautiful flower. “The lotus flower blooms most beautifully from the deepest and thickest mud.” – Buddhist Proverb.

    1. Oh nice proverb, I love it. They are so beautiful, and not all the same, loved that. Glad you like them too Janice, thank you.

  3. We went out here last season Leanne, got some quite good shots. If you are looking for somewhere close by to have a bite to eat, the gladysdale bake house just down the road towards Yarra Junction is always good value.

    1. That’s great to hear Cameron, it is a great spot for photos. I will have to remember that, thanks for the tip. Thank you Cameron.

  4. Moose will swim across an entire lake for a dessert of water lilies. Really, no kidding. Moose totally LOVE water lilies. I like them too and yours are beautiful 🙂

    1. That’s amazing Marilyn, we don’t have them here, so I don’t think we need to worry about it. lol I like them too, thank you. 😀
