Catching Up and Looking Back at Werribee Mansion

It has been a few weeks since I did one of these posts. Not much as been happening, but things are picking up now. It seemed like a good time to get one done. I also forget that I should use these posts to advertise myself. Shall we look at what’s happening around here?

Dynamic Range Magazine

The final issue is starting to come together and we have been getting some great articles for it. It looks like it is going to be another bumper issue and I’m sure you will enjoy it, well those of you who purchase it. It will be sad to see it go, but new things are ahead for me, I’m sure and the skills I learned while doing the magazine will be valuable, I know. I am really looking forward to seeing what happens now.

Teaching Long Exposure Photography

I have enough gear now that I can teach people how to do long exposures and they don’t have to worry about going out and buying it until they know what it is like. The idea is to do 2 hours for $200, which includes using my filters etc.

The next step is working out how to market them. I was thinking of using Instagram and trying to promote it there. I’ve never done that before, but it could be effective. Can’t hurt to try it at least once.

Camera Gear

I am weighing my options about my photography gear. I know that my Nikon D800 really isn’t good enough for the type of photography I want to do now, which is mainly long exposures. There are a few things that the D800 does that make it hard to get a good image. I have to do a heap of work to it to get a good base to work on.

I have to work out what camera would be good for me. The obvious choice would be the D810, the next model up, and I am happy to try it out, but then I started wondering if I should consider Canon.

Canon has the 5D Mark IV now and it looks like a great camera. Fortunately for me Canon Australia have loaned me the camera and some lenses to try out. I’ve only been able to do long exposures with it once so far, but wow, it is incredible. It seems to be really well set up for long exposure photography. I am looking forward to getting out again soon to try it some more before it has to go back to Canon.

I haven’t tried the D810, but the Canon is a clear winner for me right now. I have no money to purchase anything, and getting the Canon would be the more expensive way to go, as I have to get lenses as well, but I like how Canon Australia does business. They do so much for their users. Most of us who use Nikon here feel a little left out in the cold by the company. Maybe it is just me. I just wish Nikon did more, had more events. So I think if I can get the money together I will be jumping ship and going to Canon. I will let you know how I go.

Digital Photography School

I was asked to write an article on my photography style, while I said I wouldn’t talk about what I did, I was prepared to tell people how to develop their own style. Things to think about with their photography and such. Here is the link to the article.

How to Develop a Unique Style for Your Photography

Photos

The photos today are from a visit to Werribee Mansion almost three years ago. Amazes me how fast time goes. Would be nice to go back as they were doing some things when I was there last.

    1. Thank you Julie, it is a nice idea, not sure how I will manage it, but I do hope to get out there. Yeah, it is an idea at this stage, I am seriously considering it though, very seriously. 😀

  1. there r straight angles, but as the mansion retains its grandeur, ur camera has very well caught for a good record and publication….u shd feel encouraged…

  2. I really like the photo report on the Werribee Mansion, a building truly fit for a king. I am just taking a ‘course’ (on DVD video) with NG photographer Joel Sartore, where he is talking about interior lighting on one of his lectures. So I could look at your marvelous photos with a different perspective. Thank you,Leanne!

    1. Interior lighting is so difficult, especially when you have no control over it. I am sure you will learn a lot. It is a great building and great that you can go in and just wander around on your own. I do like that. Thank you Peter.

  3. Big decision to consider, switching platforms. So funny to read this line “In today’s world, everyone has a camera. It may be as simple as the camera on their phones, but they still have one.” having recently shared a similar thought. You’re terrific, and always an inspiration. There’s an expression in the film/video business – “we’ll fix it in post.” Short of ‘dodging’ and timing exposures, we’ve always been so much more limited in digital still – until recently. Fine thoughts on developing a style.

    1. Thank you so much, it is good to know and glad you agree with me. I don’t like that attitude about fixing in post, it doesn’t always work, and something to be careful about.
