MM 4-1: Monochrome Madness

A new year has begun. How amazing. Thank you everyone for your messages of congratulations, and it it was wonderful to hear how many of you enjoy it each week. Someone did comment about how people don’t really comment on the images anymore. I don’t know why that is. Could be my fault, I don’t know.

The next theme is next week, it has come around so fast this time. The theme is movement or moving, your interpretation. If you have an idea for the next theme, then please let me know. It just needs to be fairly general.

I have another image of the Queen Victoria when she was docked in Melbourne a month or so back. I really wanted to do one of these, maybe because I have booked my tickets to go on another ship to Tasmania later in the year. I’m really looking forward to going back and getting back on the ship. Well, the Spirit of Tasmania isn’t as fancy as this one, but it will get me where I need to go, with my friend, my mum and a car.

Don’t forget all the instructions on how to enter your own images are at the bottom of the post.  If you have entered an image then please remember to check your image in the gallery, scroll down and see if anyone has left you any comments.

Monochrome Madness each week and if you wish to participate and submit an image here is how you do it:-

  • You must email me the image you want to include and if you have a blog or website, or somewhere else, please include the link. My email address is leanne@leannecole.com.au
  • The image size should be low res, so the largest side should be 1000 pixels or less.
  • Please insert either your name or your blogs name in the file name.
  • Remember I am on Australian time, so with GMT I am +11 hours at the moment, I publish my post on Thursday morning.
  • If you need more help with sending images, and get confused about time zones, etc, well, there is a great website called The World Clock, if you go to that and look at Melbourne time, if it’s before 6pm on Tuesday evening, then you can still send me images.  If it’s after that time, you can send me an image, but it will be set aside for the following week.
  • Remember to include a link to your blog or website.
  • Please remember to resize your images, it is fairly simply, you just need to go into any editing software and usually under Image you will find, resize, scale, or image size, something like that and you can resize your image there. Change the dimensions to pixels and make the longest side 1000 pixels or smaller, hit return, and for most types of software that should change the other side automatically as well. Just remember to save it with a different name so you know it is the smaller version.  If you have any problems, please contact me, I don’t mind helping out.

Please note you don’t have to be a WordPress blogger to be in this challenge, you can have a link to a Facebook page, a Flickr page, anywhere really, or no link.  We just want to encourage people to do monochrome images, just for the madness of it. Just to let you know also, that as soon as the challenge is published, all emails and images you have sent me are deleted from my computer.

  1. These are super images Leanne ..I seldom comment on individual images but always enjoy them. Not your fault at all if people don’t comment. Love the cat:)

  2. I don’t think the lack of comments is your fault, nor do I think it’s necessarily a bad thing.

I can’t speak for others, but I can say why I stopped commenting on individual photos and only make general comments.

I certainly have photos I like more than others and that I could single out. Some I like for the subject matter, some for the composition, some for the conversion from color to B&W. I especially like photos that give me ideas I can apply to my own shooting.

The thing with comments is that at some point it can begins to feel like a competition or popularity contest. It’s one thing if that’s what this challeneg was set up to be, but it wasn’t.

Plus, some people know each other through reading each other’s blog. There may be a reluctance to picking a photo other than the one of a friend or acquaintance because it might be perceived as a slight. On the other hand, picking a friend’s photo over a “better” photo can be construed as condescending.

The safe bet for many is to keep quiet and hit the general “like”.

I could certainly comment on each of the photos: . . . excluding yours and mine (I’m removing bias), there are two photos that captured my attention because of their composition. Two more were somewhat interesting because of the subject matter but were not especially notable for their conversion or composition. The rest are photos that do not strike me as all that interesting, but that does not speak to their merit; rather, that speaks to my own tastes. If I happened to really love ships, I would like your shot more than the other photos regardless of the quality of it.

That said, why my opinion would matter to anyone is not clear to me. We are, after all, our own worst critics; we constantly compare what we do to what we see others do (perhaps it’s just me).

And while it is nice to hear praise, I see this more as a vehicle for encouraging others to participate and flex their B&W photographic muscle. To that end, what we see above are examples of how other people interpret the challenge and we can maybe learn something from those interpretations . . . or not.

Next week’s theme will be interesting precisely because it is subject to personal interpretation and I hope to learn something new, something I had not thought of myself. So, if there are 10 great photos of birds in flight and 10 great shots of flowing water, I personally will not be overly impressed because I can look at my own photos and see the same thing. However, a photo of a clock pendulum or spinning coin or other interesting subjects I don’t normally photographs, that I can learn from.

    How’s that for a comment?

    1. I have wondered the same thing Disperser, I totally agree, I do not like it when some images get left out.
I hope you don’t mind me not responding to you comment except in this short way, lol.
The next theme is going to be interesting, I have some ideas, and will be working on them I hope. Hopefully I will find some time before next week.
