Have I told you about the new phone lenses that I got from Struman Optics?
Only one flower today, I’m afraid I’ve been a bit slack with the macros this week. I’ve been busy and I have the Canon 5D4 I need to play with before it goes back. However, spring is almost here and flowers are starting to appear everywhere, so I will be back getting heaps again soon.
This afternoon a friend picked me up so we could go to Alowyn Gardens in Yarra Glen for some macro photography. I am still trying out the Samyang 100mm lens and thought it would be a great opportunity to use it.
There were a lot of flowers out, so it ended up being a quick trip, but that didn’t matter. I still got some lovely shots, have coffee and a catch up with Suzzanna.
One of the benefits of being a contributer/writer for Digital Photography School is that I get to try out a lot of new gear. It can be good, see what is happening out there, but in some ways it can be terrible, especially when I really like something and have to give it back. Still I usually get over it and then something else arrives that I fall in love with.
My mother’s garden to be more precise. On my recent trip to my mums the first day there was horrible, it just rained and rained. My friend and I tried to get out to take photos, but it really wasn’t good for it, so we decided to just do some macro shots. My mothers garden always seems to have flowers, helps that she loves gardening.
We had thought that we would have to set up on the back verandah, but an incredible thing happened, as we were starting to get our gear ready the rain stopped. It was almost like a sign.
I have been watching lots of tutorials on macro photography and have got myself quite a collection of gear now. I have a lot of Lensbaby gear for doing them, and my extension tubes of course. Then there is my macro lens and I took my 50mm lens as well. We experimented a lot and tried lots of different combinations. I was even using her Tamron macro lens.
I will be upfront here, I know it frustrates some people, but I have no idea what the flowers are. It’s not something that really interests me, I just love photographing them and seeing how they come out. If I love a flower, I will find out its name so I can get it for my garden, but it kind of stops there. Sorry if that annoys you.
For the photos I have left the file names so you could see what lens I used and with what, but for some reason the default gallery with this theme does not show them. I am starting to find too many faults with this theme and am at the stage where I might need to start looking for a new one. The galleries are too sensitive and don’t show what I want, unfortunately. The joys of self hosting I suppose. Of course, the best solution would be to pay someone to do a web design for me that is exactly what I want, but I don’t have the money for that, maybe one day. I am putting the photos into a gallery that I purchased a plugin for. You should be able to see what they were shot with in this one.
I will continue working on ideas so you can find out and comment on galleries. The search continues.
I hope your weekend is going well. I’m getting excited about the next installment of Dynamic Range which will be out on Sunday. It looks great, and I’m so proud of it.

Last week I spent a wonderful day at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. One of the things I love about going is the range of flowers that are there that you can photograph. The day was perfect for taking photos. The sun was shining and there wasn’t too much wind, sadly the weather didn’t stay that way.
No one looks at you weirdly as if you are ripping them off because you are taking photos. It is a comfortable environment to do it, and I think it is almost expected.
I can take as many as I like. There are so many people there doing exactly the same thing. Everywhere you look there are people with cameras around their necks. Some are there to get shots like me, and others just to record what they are seeing.
I love doing macro flowers but if you don’t have a great garden then opportunities to take some of these flowers is incredibly hard. I don’t have one, I don’t have the patience to look after one, so events like this are perfect for me.
It is great getting lots of photos and then coming home putting them on the computer to see what I can do to them. I love the opportunity to play with them. I sometimes feel I don’t do it enough.
I don’t think I did a great job of getting the flowers this year. I thought I would an opportunity to go back so I didn’t spend as much time as I should have. Unfortunately, I didn’t get back. Still there is always next year. I did make contact with a nursery and there might be the possibility of going there to get some more macro photos. We will see.
These images were all taken with the Tamron 90mm macro lens.
