A look at Edward Hopper

It is the day we look at an artist and it seems that Edward Hopper is a good one to do that. I could talk about him a lot, but I thought you might like a video.

A look at Edward Hopper

Those of you that have been following me for a long time should be very aware of my high regard for Edward Hopper, the painter and artist. He has been a massive influence on my own work as well.

It would be easy to continue showing the same posts or variations of it, however, it occurred to me the other day that I could find videos on these artists.

This week I’ve been trying to find one on Hopper. One that you can watch and get a sense of who the man was.

Why look at artists

I seem to be getting more speaking engagements about fine art photography and one of the things I try to do is talk about other artists. We can never underestimate how important it is to look at the work of others. Whether they are photographers, painters, drawers or printmakers. They all create images.

Through those images, we can learn about composition and how they are created. I’m sure you have heard that saying if you want to be a good writer, then read a lot of books. It is the same with photography. If you want to be good look at the work of many.

It is important that they be in your genre as well. No point looking at portraits if you want to do landscapes. You get the idea?

A video

For today we are going to look at the work of Edward Hopper. This documentary is all about him and his career. Shows you his ups, and downs. The success he had and how hard he had to work for it. There is also footage of him being interviewed.

  1. I finally got time to watch the Hopper video. I am familiar with his Name but the video is i teresting. I love the way he used light and shadow. I can see how photography can learn so much from artists. I love street and travel photography. That of people and Hopper defines that so well in his art. Thanks for sharing. I am going to be more aware of how other painters and photographer’s work can be compared.

    1. Glad you found the video interesting Pam. He was an amazing artist. We can learn so much looking at other photographers. YOu’re welcome, that is great, you will see more here as well.

  2. That was an interesting video and artist. Thanks for sharing this. I like the contemplative, quiet aspects of his paintings, and the observing the person looking out… with a kind of melancholy.
