Doing more Video

Facebook loves video, apparently, so I have been trying to do more. Which then brings another problem, what do I do videos of?

I have thousands of photos, I could do lots with those, but I would like to do more that is a little different.

As I am trying to get my editing group off the ground, I thought maybe I could do one that shows the layers of an image and how it is developed. So the following video has five images, they have been opened in Photoshop and all the layers were switched off. Then one by one they are switched back on so you can get an idea of how they were made.

You can see that each one is different and they each take a different amount of time to process. It is something I’ve tried to explain to many people, and this is why it is hard or impossible for me to teach people how I edit my photos. You need to know what I’m thinking, be in my head, and frankly, that would be too scary.

All the photos are cityscapes of Melbourne. Seemed like a good place to start. There may be other other videos like this if people like them.

I hope you enjoy this video.

  1. Loved your creative use of video here. Your style has become something else so it is fun to try and guess where you are going to go with the photo.

  2. LOL, I’m using the same technique (still) every now and than. I fiddled it out by using GIMP about 10 years ago for coping with huge contrasts in my images, at a time, HDR or DRI software wasn’t available or simply much too expensive.

    1. I used to do a lot HDR, but now I rarely do. My techniques change and evolve over time, probably as I change and evolve as well. It is an interesting process. I wonder if I will look at these images one and think how horrible they are. Thank you André.

  3. Leanne, I loved this idea. it’s beautifully executed, and the music is perfect. It gives us an idea of how much you work at getting the image you want. It also shows us what a great teacher you are should others want to learn. Keep posting these. They are fun and shows your talent.

    1. Thank you Anne, it seemed like a fun way to do it. Yeah, the getting students always seems to be the hard part, at least for me. Onwards and upwards.

  4. When you mentioned video at the beginning of your post, I was instantly thinking of a true motion video. I am sure glad I kept reading. I find it fascinating how you made such creative use of your work with layers. It gives a clear concept of the many changes possible with a single picture. Thank you, Leanne!

    1. Yeah, most of my videos are that sort of thing, putting photos together. Thank you Peter, I’m glad you kept reading as well. It was fun to do.

  5. I love the concept here, but I want more information about your processing. Your images are fabulous, and maybe you don’t want to give away too much of your technique, but I’d love to know more about how you use each of the different layers.

    1. Thank you Mike, glad you like it. I had hoped that people would be interested in learning how I use the tools and adjustments in Photoshop, but alas no. I spent a lot of money learning to do what I do, so I am not going to just give it away, but I’m happy to hear you like it.
