Favourite Image Series – Flatiron Building in black and white

Monochrome Wednesday - Flatiron in New York

I hope you are enjoying this series. I don’t know how long it will go for as I don’t have just a couple of images that I love, but lots of different ones. I mean after doing this blog for 15 years I have to have quite a few.

And yes, 15 years last month is when I first started blogging. Seems almost unreal. I did start on a different platform, then changed to WordPress.com and then in 2016 started on this blog which is a WordPress.org site. Anyway, enough of that.

When I was trying to think of what image to use today, I thought what is one of my favourite architectural images and I think this one of the Flatiron Building in New York City is a one of those.

This was taken in 2015 on my trip to the US and I got to spend around 10 days in New York City. It was pretty incredible I have to say. Such a vibrant city and I don’t think you really understand how big it is until you are walking around it.

When I first arrived there we made a list of all the things I wanted to see and this was on that list.

One of the friends that I was visiting NY with and I got up really early on this morning to go and shoot the Flatiron Building. We were there for sunrise and while it wasn’t a great one, we did get a little colour. It was also good because there weren’t millions of people around and we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Perhaps for Silent Sunday tomorrow I will share more of the other images.

I took lots of photos and this one was taken with the camera basically on the ground looking up.

This image was taken with the Nikon D750 and the Tamron 15-30mm lens. The ISO was on 100, the aperture f10 and the shutter speed 1/3 of a second.

I’m sure you can tell that I have processed this a lot, and I mean a lot. I converted it to black and white, though I did add a soft cream tone as well. I removed all the buildings that were around it and put in a new sky that had some clouds and movement. Another thing I did was make the zebra crossing at the front go across the entire image as they really only go part of the way across.

It was a great morning and afterwards we went to Starbucks, not the best coffee if you ask me, and I shouted my friend a coffee. Funny story when we were out the day before we were in another Starbucks and it was really busy. I walked up to her and said if you shout me a coffee I will shout next time. I didn’t think anything of it, it is something we say here. Her husband came up to me and said by shouting you you mean buy your coffee for you. I said yes. She loved that and kept saying the next morning that it was my shout. LOL. I  always think of that when I see this image.

I couldn’t get over how coffee everywhere there always came with cardboard sleeves for the takeaway cups, because the coffee was so hot you couldn’t hold the cup. Here in Melbourne if you go to a place where the coffee is that hot you don’t go back. It means they have burned the milk and it won’t taste very good. It amazed me how so many places there burned the milk so much. I had one coffee in San Francisco at a McDonalds that was so hot I couldn’t drink it for half an hour and it was really horrible coffee. Coffee at Maccas here is not the best, but it is reliable and okay. I hope all that has changed in the 10 years since I was there and New York has better coffee now.

  1. Hi, Leanne. Just getting to know your work. Really impressed so far. Thank you for all your likes and encouragement as I embark upon my journey as a photographer! Much appreciated.

  2. Fantastic shot. I assume you must be kidding when you are complaining about coffee at McD or Starb, the good coffee is at the local places. Our local corner place roasts their own beans!

    1. Thank you Rebecca, and no not kidding. I thought the coffee in the places I went to was pretty bad. Mind you I come from Melbourne and we are real coffee snobs here. Getting good beans is part of a good coffee. There were lots and lots of starbucks here in Melbourne and they have nearly all closed, I think there is about 6 left, in the tourist spots, but they failed because why would we go to them for coffee when there a lots of cafes that serve much better coffee.

    2. Pretty much true, though coffee at maccas here can be quite good, not as good as cafes, but much better than Starbucks. I think that is true too.

  3. I absolutely loved this post. First your photograph is outstanding beyond words. Then you took me back to my visit to Melbourne and how you touted the Australian coffee, which I had to admit was very, very good. Thanks for starting my day with a smile.

    1. Thank you so much Anne, glad you liked it. I remember you very reluctantly telling me that you thought the coffee was pretty good. I think so too. You’re welcome, love to do that.

    1. It is a favourite for many I think Ted. It is funny how that happens when you live somewhere. There are lots of places I haven’t been too here or gone to see.

  4. I love the Flatiron building. but I loved all your writing about shouting and coffee and how hot it is. Amazing that a simple thing like coffee here and in Australia can be so different. This was fun, Leanne.

    1. Thank you Lois, it is an amazing building. Very different Lois, it was probably one of the biggest things I missed. You know that other thing I noticed was that coffee always seemed to be served in takeaway cups regardless if you were sitting in or taking away, I found that weird. Here if you are sitting in you get the proper cup for it. Glad you enjoyed my mini rant Lois.
