Favourite Image Series – The one with the lighthouse and the milky way

Let’s start with Happy Easter for those that celebrate and those who don’t enjoy the time off, if you have it.

This was not the first time I photographed the milky way, but it was one of the first few. It was taken in 2014 at Split Point Lighthouse, Aireys Inlet. I was with another person and we were taken photos straight up the side of the lighthouse and I was getting annoyed because I could see potential for a different image. The person I was with didn’t think it would be worth it, so in the end I just walked off and took this.

I do think when you go out to take photos with other people that it should be an equal experience and both of you, or all of you, should be allowed to take the photos they want and be encouraged too. You should never hear the words “I don’t think that would look very good”. It is not nice to hear people tell you that the image you want to get won’t be very good. I heard it a bit from this person, and I haven’t been out with them for over 10 years. I couldn’t handle being made to feel like I wasn’t a very good photographer and my ideas were not good.

So after all that and me going to get the following image, when he saw what I got he then decided that maybe it wasn’t a bad shot and took it as well. So glad I didn’t listen.

I love the way it looks like the Milky Way is coming out of the lighthouse. It was one of the those shots that I think would be hard to set up beforehand. I was hoping to get the Milky Way over the top of the lighthouse, but how it turned out was so much better.

Don’t you love it when you go out to get an image and you end up with something so much better than you were hoping for?

I think for tomorrows Silent Sunday I will share a heap of milky way images, well a selection. I hope you will enjoy those as well.

Take care.

  1. I’m just overwhelmed, … the captures make you respond emotionally, … they’re both so beautiful, ( I know, it’s an overused word …but…) … Happy Easter Sunday, …

  2. Wow, that looks fantastic! I’m lucky that my husband is happy to wander off separately if we have different ideas about what to photograph, and the couple of friends I go out on shoots with are very flexible and willing to swap ideas for shots.

    1. That is how it should be, I hated the idea that what I wanted wasn’t worth it, no idea what the guys problem was. Flexibility is key and helping everyone get what they want, if you ask me. Thank you Sarah.

  3. I do agree that it’s great when you go out to get an image and you end up with something so much better than you were hoping for!

  4. Brilliant shot!

I think photographers should express or create whatever vision they want in their photography. In the end, there’s always going to be some viewers who may not like one’s photography, but that is merely taste, just like any art form – be it painting, pottery, photography, sketching and so on.

Just like the rule of thirds. Many years ago on my old nature blog (now deleted), I had one man say my photo wasn’t very good because I didn’t adhere to the rule of thirds. I replied that there’s always a time and place to ignore the rules and just create whatever composition or vision you want.

If we always stuck to the ‘rules’ in photography’, we’d be denying talented artists the freedom to express themselves.

    1. Thank you Vicki.
I totally agree, though it is hard when you go out with others and that means moving around to other places, it should be equal outing where both parties get what they want and are encouraged by the other.
Oh dear the old rule of thirds, I have always thought it should be considered guide and not a rule, because it doesn’t always fit.
Very good statement Vicki and I couldn’t agree more.

  5. The thing about photography is, everyone has their own unique perspective. And a good photographer will often see things others don’t. We shouldn’t be afraid to follow our own visions. Even when in the company of others that don’t understand it.

    1. I agree, I just think when you go out with others that you should do everything that everyone wants to do. YOu can learn a lot by doing that too. Thanks Randy.

  6. Very interesting image, Leanne. I absolutely do enjoy discovering that an image looks better or contains an extra something than I thought when I took it. Good work.

  7. I like both Milky Way images. But there is a valuable lesson here–do your own thing! You can be in the same exact location and come home with very different images depending on your mind’s focus.

    1. They are the same image Anne, I just cropped for the header. Thank you. I agree, if I go out with people it has to be an equal partnership with respect from everyone.
