Five days along the Great Ocean Road

The trip along the Great Ocean Road was fantastic and I got to see many parts that I haven’t seen before, then others that I haven’t seen since I was a child. It is a magical part of the country and having two people in the car that have never seen it before saying “wow” over and over was quite wonderful. Pam and Mike loved it and thought it was special.Β

It is always fun being with people from other countries and learning the differences between our languages. Funny how you can say something very ordinary, or so you think, and then discover that it is something very foreign to your visitors. I must say I enjoyed that.

We started by spending the day driving to Apollo Bay and stopping along the way. There are many places that you can stop there. We stopped at two lighthouses, had lunch in Lorne. It rained on and off, so that made it a little hard to get too many photos.

We spent two nights in Apollo Bay. The full day we had we spent sunrise down on the rocks photographing the sunrise and the most amazing waves. They were so high and very strong. After breakfast we headed to Cape Otway and the lighthouse there. Again the weather was rather dreary. We had hoped to find Koalas in the trees along the road to the cape, but after searching and searching we couldn’t find any. There are usually so many, but I suspect the weather had them hiding.

The third day we left Apollo Bay and headed towards Port Fairy. On the road there we stopped off at the 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, the Arch and London Bridge. We had hoped to do Gibson steps, but the tide was in a long way, so it seemed better to give it a miss.

On day four a walk to the Port Fairy lighthouse at dawn was refreshing and finding no one else there was a bonus. We went onto Portland to look at the marina, then off to Cape Nelson lighthouse before trying to see the blowholes there. Unfortunately the tide was perhaps too long and we didn’t see anything. We ended up in this tiny cottage in Donovans for the night, and struggled to find something open for dinner, everything closed at that part of the world at 6pm.

On the last day we headed inland and made our way back to Melbourne. The trip coming to an end. I also had to say good bye to Pam and Mike. The end of a wonderful trip. I really enjoyed it. I really didn’t have much time for editing photos, so a few were done in some stolen hours while in Apollo Bay, and the last couple after I got back. My new laptop and the new Wacom Intuos Pro tablet made it all so much easier. I can’t imaging travelling without either again.

I have a few photos to show you. I still have a lot to go through, but I really wanted to share these with you. I will share more as I process them.

    1. Thank you Pam, I have done some, still lots to go, but I have lots of time to get them done, I think. Yeah, it was all great. Thanks for inviting me to go with you.

  1. Beautiful, beautiful images, Leanne. And in the middle of winter too. The waves and spray certainly look big and love the cloud cover too. Looking forward to see more of your trip. Sounded like it went very well with great company and great photography spots, very happy for you πŸ™‚

    1. It was a great trip Mabel, I really enjoyed it and know I will look back on it fondly. The waves were massive, I don’t think I have ever seen them that big before. Thank you so much Mabel.

  2. Hi Leanne, I am also just back from a weeks holiday at Apollo Bay πŸ™‚ I did not see any koala’s at Cape Otway and I think that they recently culled many of them because they were starving and sickly. I did manage to see a couple of koala’s at Kennett River about 500m out of town along a side road and as usual they were sleeping high in the treetops. Did you manage to get photographs on Wednesday when the magnificent storm clouds were about? Regards …….. Aubrey

    1. Yes, I heard about the culling, sad, but I guess needed, they would just starve I guess. Glad you got to see some, I wasn’t so bothered, but I know that my US friends really wanted to see one, oh well. I didn’t take any photos on Wednesday we were driving back from the SA border, so I missed them all. I hope you got lots of great photos. Thank you Aubrey.

  3. Leanne as always great captures However I would like to thank you for identifying the long exposures. It helps me a lot

  4. Fantastic seascapes, Leanne. Really dramatic– the waves are huge. Love the spray! Brings back great memories of the lighthouse and wandering that beautiful stretch. Thanks!

    1. Thank you Jane, the waves were massive, even I was shocked. The spray, or spindrift was wonderful. I’m glad to hear they brought back memories for you. I have many more to come.
