Lens-Artists Challenge #353 – Stormy

With STORMY, I think it can be different in different parts of the world. Where I live, we get the odd thunderstorm, some wild winds, but that is about it really. We do get rain and lots of it from time to time, and maybe some hail, though Melbourne doesn’t flood like other places. We might get bits here and there, but not like other places.

We have had storms that have been bad and I remember one that happened back at the end of 2016. It started raining and it kept raining. My husband came to my desk to say what the … Well, we got 70mm of rain in one hour, that is about 3 inches. It was so much that our house leaked everywhere, as did many others. We had other damage too, but it was wild.

It was a bit like the hail storm that turned my car into a golf ball back in 2010.  So we get storms, but compared to other places, we are relatively safe here. So, when Beth from Wandering Dawgs set us this challenge, I really had to think. I must admit I don’t really go out in them if I can help it. However, I was reminded of a couple of times that I was out photographing in them.

I was doing a workshop around Lorne for long exposure photography and the weather was so bad we took a drive to the 12 Apostles and watched the rain coming in to us. We also stopped at Cape Otway and did the same thing. Then the following year I went to Port Campbell for a few days with a woman I knew to take some photos around there, and it did nothing but rain, so we had to chance it. The ocean gets so wild when that happens.

So here a few of those photos.

Thank you, Beth, for being our host this week. I look forward to seeing more challenges from you. I hope everyone will go and see what see has posted.

  1. I do love a stormy sea so your header photo especially caught my eye! I love the lighting on the lighthouse shot too, but all of them are great illustrations of ‘stormy’ 🙂

  2. I enjoyed your variety of photos for storms – and also sharing about the Melbourne area and how you do not get too many major storms – but that 2010 hail storm does sound like it damaged cars (golf ball?) and online, I have seen trucks/cars wrapped in bubble wrap – just to prevent that damage

    1. Thank you Yvette. Yeah, it was a very rare storm that had big hail stones. We get hail, but usually really small stuff. I would hate to live somewhere where you had to do that to your car all the time.

    2. yes – and back in 1992, I lined in central florida and there was a hail storm – many friends had car damage – and guess what? I just happened to travel to the tampa area that day – so I was out of town – wow – what good timing for me!

    3. You were so lucky, wow. My bad luck was because it was a rare time that I drove my car into the city with a friend. I blame her.

    4. hahah – yes – it was all her fault – but at least it was for a good reason – being with a friend –

    5. Yeah, let’s blame her, I’m all for that. Yeah, it was good having her with me when we realised what was happening, it was so loud.

  3. Leanne, you did very well to fulfil this challenge. The first image makes me feel like I’l out on those rough seas.
The storm clouds over the 12 Apostles are fierce too.
I really enjoyed the viewing of all your stormy images.

  4. Great images, Leanne! I liked your feature image a lot. And the photos of the Twelve Apostles are fantastic. You’re very good with color, and these images show that.

  5. A little drama, perfect for you. In the Lowcountry we do get interesting storms, I tend to stay inside though. The other afternoon we heard the lightning (not thunder) sizzle as it came down out front. Our back porch is inset, but we both levitated into the house LOL. Not damage at all.
