Looking back at my attempts at food photography

A look back on the last 12 months

Happy Sunday everyone. I thought today we might take a look back at some of my attempts at food photography.

It has been weird around here, muggy and overcast. We finally got some rain. Over 47mm which I think is almost 2 inches overnight. It is so nice to go out and see the garden absolutely soaked. Unfortunately, it has brought humidity with it. Still I don’t want to complain about that, it rained, it rained.

Anyway, I was writing a post for a website and I was talking about how when the pandemic started I looked for different ways to take photos. I had started baking so it seemed like a natural thing to do, photograph what I made.

I always thought it was crap and that I wasn’t very good at it. However, now that I am looking back I am wondering if I should have stuck with it and done more. Or maybe it is what I should do. Maybe I wasn’t as bad as I thought. Well, now that time has passed anyway it seems to look okay.

I am going to leave it there and let you enjoy your day. Take care everyone.

  1. I don’t think they are crap. If you see the improvement in your photography skills that’s the most important. I often compare my photos with others, and usually I find lots of them much better than mine. But comparing to my early food photography skills I see big improvement. So if I won’t stop trying I will become better. Although there will be always someone better than me. Keep going if you enjoy it 🙂

    1. I think sometimes looking back after some time can help too. Yeah, I will have to keep at it I think. I’m working on it, I just need to get some food that is worth photographing. hahha. Thanks Paula.

  2. The hardest critic is within ourselves and it’s proven just by you believing you weren’t that good. Well the proof is in the pudding.. literally! You’re a wonderful photographer and I hope you chance picking up the camera again to shoot some delicious snaps 🙂

  3. I think you have done very well with these Leanne. Even after 10 years as a professional photographer I still struggle with food photography. Admittedly most of my work features people but I do think that I should do more food photography.

    1. Thank you Alan, but maybe you are like me, and just think you aren’t so good. However, I do agree with the last part, we both should do more.

    1. So true Donna, we are. I do wonder if it is because in your mind you can see what was all around when you were taking it. Thank you. I have been thinking that maybe I should give it more of a go. Though, it also means lots more baking. That can’t be bad.

  4. Maybe it required that distance for you to see that many of them are absolutely beautiful. I specially liked your close up of cinnamon rolls. I find it very hard to do anything at all with that bland texture, but your photo is wonderful

    1. Yeah, I think you are right, distance has changed my mind about a few of them. I don’t know about that, I think it is about taking lots of photos too and seeing which ones work. Thank you.

  5. I honestly cannot imagine why you thought these looked like crap at the time. While some are better than others, some are downright luscious… and evocative.

    1. I think it was because in my mind, at the time, all I saw was the chaos of taking them. So they seemed messy. I don’t really see that now. Thank you.
