Making videos and showing me

It has been a while, but I’m having a go at making videos and trying to decide if showing me is worth it. I know that sounds strange, but stick with me.

Trying new things is not something that has ever scared me. I like doing it, but there are sometimes aspects that I don’t like.

Making videos

There is no doubt that I love talking. If you have met me you would know this to be true. I can’t help it. Talking is easy, typing can be frustrating. I am the type of person that prefers a phone call to texting. Though, I have to admit texting is good if it is going to be quick.

So when I am showing you my garden, for instance, it seems to make sense to just do a video. I can talk about what is happening in the garden and show you at the same time. It makes so much sense to me to make videos of what I’m doing.

If I do them then I can take you outside to my garden and show you. Or I can show you what I’m doing in the kitchen, which is something I want to do as well. When I go out to take photos I can take you along so you can see what I’m doing.

Buying a gimbal

Someone criticised me once for doing a video from my phone without using something like a gimbal, so I have bought one. Actually, it is the second one as the first one really didn’t work with my phone. So I have been experimenting with the one I purchased.

So the video that I am going to link you to is using it and it is a bit rough. Also, there were some problems with my phone, but hey, it is all new and I can only get better, I hope.

One problem is showing me

This is something I’ve never been comfortable with. One of the reasons, beyond the fact that I am getting old and I’m overweight is that my hair is thinning. I am really embarrassed about it.

It is something I’ve been noticing for around 20 years now. It is hard too because it seems to be something that we don’t talk about. We accept that men will lose their hair, but we pretend it doesn’t happen to women.

For me, it is genetic. It happened to my grandmother and seems to be happening to all the granddaughters. Some worse than others. Because of this there is nothing I can do to stop or improve it.

Women with thinning hair

When I was growing up I never noticed it happening to women, but now that it is happening to me I am noticing that it happens to so many women. There are a lot of older women out there with very little hair.

It does seem to be something that we have to be silent and embarrassed about. So with this thought, it is a major reason I don’t show myself on video or in videos, well unless I wear a hat.

As this is the first time I have talked about it I am going to try and build up the courage to actually talk on the video showing me. I will most likely wear a hat, that would make me more comfortable.

There is a reason why I want to do this. I enjoy watching videos from others and seeing what they do. They show themselves and talk to you, so I wonder if that is something that would be better. At the end of the day, I’m an old chick and do people really want to see me. However, having said that it is fun to do, so do I need to care?

My video

I have been taking lots of short videos and have put them together. As I said earlier it is a bit rough, but I think it is a good start.

Another thing that has changed is the name of my YouTube channel. Since it really isn’t just about photography I thought it needed a name that reflected me more. It is a working title and at the moment I’m calling it, Working out life past middle age. I think that kind of sums up what I am trying to do. There are so many things that are changing in my life and I want to share it all.

Just one final note, the photos are of my first dahlia that has flowered. Many more are about it, but that is the first one.

Take care everyone.

  1. Well done your garden looks great! Iā€™m a fan of flowers in the veg garden too! I wonder if white butterfly caterpillars have been nailing your pak choy? Wish my tomatoes looked as good as yours!

    1. The flowers are great. I think you are spot on with the pak choy, though I haven’t been able to work out how to net them yet. My tomatoes look good, but I still haven’t got any fruit from them. I am getting frustrated. Thank you Julie.

    2. I never grow brassicas in summer for that reason .. however, you could use a cloche to protect them, a bit of work, but worth it! My tomatoes are coming along nicely now, I need to watch the birds they are also interested …

    3. Yeah, I have tried to find those grow tunnel things to protect them, but not a lot of luck so far. Lots to think about for next year. I haven’t had a problem with the birds so far, but I am sure that could change. Thanks Julie.

  2. Such a wonderful delight to see your garden sprouting, growing, blooming, and fruiting. What a great variety you have! Over here, in the South of the US the dreary days of winter are just closing in on us. Everything is mostly gray and cold. The birds seem not to mind, they were chirping away. We have many visiting from up north and what is cold to us must seem just fine to them.
I can’t wait to see the progress of your garden. You have done a amazing job. Obviously you are and enjpying it and can be right proud. Be well and all the best for the holidays!

    1. Thank you Ludwig. We have been getting lots of rain, which is good, but then lots of humidity, not so good. Then it gets hot in between, interesting summer really. I love watching YouTube channels with snow.
I really am enjoying it, I am loving seeing it all change and grow. I have so much to leave, but there you are. Thanks again and happy new year.

  3. wow, you’ve been busy. So much. People around where I live in Ohio have been more into doing the up gardens. We use to garden, but no longer because of my age. Last one we tried, the rabbits enjoyed it. lol Nice video and thanks for sharing.

    1. That’s for sure Peabea, it has been great, I’ve been loving getting out in the garden, though it is starting to get too hot now. Thank you, it has been good to see how many have enjoyed it.
There is something about covid that has caused a lot of people to do the same thing. I wonder why, probably from being stuck at home.

  4. Thanks so much for sharing your gardening efforts and results. I’m sorry that you’re worrying about your appearance — I, too, have thinning hair. And a growing body that I’m disgusted with. But life does go on, and some of the people I love the most would never be put on a magazine cover. Wishing you all the best with your ever-evolving photography and posts on YouTube. Happy holidays!

    1. Oh Rusha, I hear you, I am much the same. I am trying not to let it all bother me too much. I sometimes wonder if more people like us just got out there and showed the world we don’t care would it make a difference. Maybe it is something I can try. Thank you so much Rusha, I’m looking forward to the new year.

    1. Oh wow, so much snow, I can’t even comprehend what that would be like. We are very much in summer here now, it is hot. Thank you Dorothy, I will try and do some more to help warm you up. Thank you.

    1. Thank you Sherry, good to hear you enjoyed the tour, and sorry to hear it is happening to you too. It is a pain really.

  5. Hi Leanne, I think that you should do whatever you are comfortable with, and that appearance doesn’t really matter to anyone who matters. šŸ™‚ I am guessing that people find you after an interest in photography, gardening or something similar so we are interested in you as a person. I also think that the whole “beauty from within” thing is real. I’ve met people who are quite attractive in their own way simply because they are fascinating, or have a genuine smile. Speaking for myself, I’m a bit overweight and bald, so I won’t be throwing any stones in glass houses or even glasshouses. Go for it, and enjoy it. Very best wishes.. Simon Inglis.

    1. Thank you so much Simon, so much encouragement which is what I need right now I think. I was watching something yesterday that basically said everyone feels weird doing it when they start and to just do it. I like your idea of the beauty within. Thanks again.

  6. Just wanna say your gardens are beautiful. Must be amazing seeing all the varieties of life growing around you. Don’t stress too much about your videos. Relax with it and you’ll be fine. Can’t wait for your next one.

    1. Thank you Charleigh. It is good, I love going out and just looking at it, I still have a lot of work to do, but will get there eventually. I will try and do that with the videos, I’m looking forward to seeing where I go with them. Thanks again.

  7. Thank you for sharing the growing of all your plants, it seems like an abundance you are nurturing . Nice to hear your voice as well, it ‘s always great to put together an image and a voice. Wish you well with all your growing , may they happily come to a great crop.

    1. You’re welcome Cornelia, it is nice to show what I am doing in the garden. It is growing and expanding. Thank you so much Cornelia.
