Manhattan Skyline

The other day I had to do some work on a image unexpectedly and as I was doing some basic work to it, I wondered. So I decided to see what I could do with it and spent a lot more time on it.

I really like the way it has come out. I did quite a bit of work on the buildings to bring them out a lot more. I used curves quite a bit to achieve that. I also like using the dodging tool as well. I added some colours to the shadows as well.

I had a similar image a while back, it wasn’t quite the same, it didn’t have the new World Trade Center, but I like having that in it. It is becoming an iconic building in New York and you know when you see it that  you are looking at New York. I also like that you can see the Empire State Building as well. The difference in heights between the two is quite amazing. That could be due to the fact that the ESB is a lot further back, still nice having it there.

I really want to do some shots like this of Melbourne, but we don’t have a big expanse of water like that for you to get it in the distance. Melbourne is far more closed in and our river isn’t that wide. We also don’t have that many large buildings. I have a few ideas and when I get my camera back I will be spending some time in the city seeing what I can get.

I’ve had some problems with the galleries here. Something changed somewhere, but I have got it all figured out now, well I hope, and you should be able to click on the images to see a larger version of the image.

  1. Leanne, this is a great photo. I love how you rendered it, dark yet crystal-clear. I would love to know your settings. I’m assuming you processed this in Adobe Lightroom..

It’s hard to beat New York for structural beauties. This is a photo I would always show in your portfolio.

As an aside, the One World Trade Centre is 541 metres high whilst the Empire State Building is 443 metres high including the tower mounted on the top. I expect the aprox 100 metre height difference counts for some of the difference, but it likely has more to do with the fact with the distance between the two buildings, approximately 5.5 K.

    1. Thank you Don, I processed it in Photoshop, too many things I can’t do in Lightroom. I do all my images like this in PS.

It is very good for these sorts of images, I do wish I had taken more. It really has inspired me and made me start thinking about my city in a different way.

I thought that might be the case, I knew it was a fair distance away. Everything is far apart in New York or so my feet thought.
I don’t know which settings you mean?

  2. It looks great, Leanne. You brought the buildings out nice and sharp. The site works great on this end, loads fast and renders clean and share. I have switched to viewing your work only on this site now. 🙂

    1. Thank you John. That is really good to hear, I like this site and want to spend more time developing it. I’m even thinking of putting a shop for images on it. Thanks for doing that, I feel like this is the site where you see my real work now.
