MM 4-17: Monochrome Madness

cairn-curran-reservoir-trees-0329

It was a close call for this one, I almost forgot. I’ve been getting heaps of work done and it completely slipped my mind that I needed to do this post. I wonder how many photos I will need to resize.

Oh, first, the next theme is Tree or Trees, you take, dead or live, leaves or none. As always, your interpretation.

I went for a drive on Monday into the country and I saw this scene beside a reservoir. It looked perfect for a monochrome image. It was a very warm day, summer is certainly on the way, unfortunately. I liked the group of trees.

Don’t forget all the instructions on how to enter your own images are at the bottom of the post.  If you have entered an image then please remember to check your image in the gallery, scroll down and see if anyone has left you any comments.

Monochrome Madness each week and if you wish to participate and submit an image here is how you do it:-

  • You must email me the image you want to include and if you have a blog or website, or somewhere else, please include the link. My email address is leanne@leannecole.com.au
  • The image size should be low res, so the largest side should be 1000 pixels or less.
  • Please insert either your name or your blogs name in the file name.
  • Remember I am on Australian time, so with GMT I am +11 hours at the moment, I publish my post on Thursday morning.
  • If you need more help with sending images, and get confused about time zones, etc, well, there is a great website called The World Clock, if you go to that and look at Melbourne time, if it’s before 6pm on Tuesday evening, then you can still send me images.  If it’s after that time, you can send me an image, but it will be set aside for the following week.
  • Remember to include a link to your blog or website.
  • Please remember to resize your images, it is fairly simply, you just need to go into any editing software and usually under Image you will find, resize, scale, or image size, something like that and you can resize your image there. Change the dimensions to pixels and make the longest side 1000 pixels or smaller, hit return, and for most types of software that should change the other side automatically as well. Just remember to save it with a different name so you know it is the smaller version.  If you have any problems, please contact me, I don’t mind helping out.

Please note you don’t have to be a WordPress blogger to be in this challenge, you can have a link to a Facebook page, a Flickr page, anywhere really, or no link.  We just want to encourage people to do monochrome images, just for the madness of it. Just to let you know also, that as soon as the challenge is published, all emails and images you have sent me are deleted from my computer.

  1. Always lovely. Your post reminds me to think in b&w sometimes. I forget and just do color. There is just something about monochrome. 🙂

    1. It sounds like you are the type of person that we created this challenge for. I was doing the same, but wanted to do more monochrome, now I do one at least every week. 😀

  2. Leanne, if I might make a suggestion . . .stop resizing photos. If they don’t meet the requirement, just throw them out.

It sounds harsh, it sounds mean, but here’s the thing: the rules are pretty clear. 1000 pixel maximum for any side.

We’re on our FOURTH YEAR and I think you’ve been more than patient. Personally, I think adults should not be coddled. If they can’t follow directions . . . well, I better not say anything; it wouldn’t be charitable.

I suggest you state that in the criteria for submission and give them one week’s grace, and then, if a photo comes in at more than 1000pixels in length or width, it gets deleted. In fact, I wouldn’t even bother notifying the person. Just add the following note to the weekly introduction:

“If your photo does not appear below, please check that you’ve sent me a photo that meets the stated criteria (i.e. Monocrome and no more than 1000pixels per side). If you believe you met the criteria, please resend the photo and it will appear next week.”

    1. I have thought about that, but then sometimes there would hardly be any images. I have worked out a way to do it quickly, so it doesn’t take long.
I should send the images back and ask them to resize, but then I don’t usually know until I am about to do the post.
The problem is that in the end even doing that means so much more work for me. I like the idea, but I’m too nice. The other problem is that people don’t read the posts, so they wouldn’t see that.
You never know though, maybe one day I will. Thanks disperser.

    2. I’m not sure what you use, but my favorite tool is FastStone Photo Resizer. You can quickly change image size and even DPI (as well as all sorts of other things) of a lot of photos with just a few clicks.

Here’s the link in case you find it useful (also for your readers):

Perhaps, the first phot of the weekly gallery should be a JPG of the notice to keep image sizes below 1000pixls. Something like this, perhaps:

    3. I just use Photoshop from Bridge, you can select the images to resize and then it just does it, it is pretty good. Thanks for the links, and I like your idea about the first photo, can I use it?

    4. If you mean the idea, sure.

If you mean my example, also sure. It’s why I linked it there. If you can’t save it, let me know and I’ll e-mail it.
