I considered calling this post the Madness of Fog, but can you call it fog madness? I decided not. Anyhoo, since it is a free week I decided to try some foggy images in monochrome.
I was watching a video from ON1 about dull images and doing stuff to them and the image he used was a foggy one, then I remembered that I had quite a few of my own. The first time I was in Tasmania back in 2016, we did a boat trip, but it was so foggy and misty that we couldn’t see much. However, I did get some great foggy images. I thought it would be interesting to try using them for today’s post since it is a free week.
The fog was very thick on this morning, though not sure if it was fog or very intense rain/mist. We had to wear raincoats when outside on the deck of the boat. I lost the lens cap off my lens on that boat. It came off and skidded over the deck and off the back, never to be seen again.
There is something almost serene about being in thick fog like this. The whole world is reduced to what you can see, and there is an eerie silence. I think when you are with others, too, you all want to be silent. Perhaps it is because of movies and how they make foggy scenes very sinister. What do you think of?
I did wonder how it would go if I converted these to monochrome and if the images would lose anything, but I think in some ways is gave them more. You don’t have the colour to distract you, and the fog is very present. I’m not sure that makes sense, but that is what came to mind.
I present to you a gallery of my eerie foggy images in monochrome from the Gordon River Boat Cruise in 2016.
They were nearly all processed differently, as I tried lots of things to make them work. I will probably end up making my own presets for black and white images, too. I’ve got two so far.
Next week it is my turn again for Monochrome Madness #35, and I have chosen WOODS, RAINFORESTS AND BUSHLAND. I know we have done trees before, but I thought it would be fun to do them in groups in the natural world. Whichever you want to do is up to you.

Excellent tonal discipline here.
Thank you.
Like a beautiful brush painting!!
Lovely description Amy, thank you.
I’ve never taken a picture on a foggy day. We don’t get much fog here, unless you go up to SF. Great pictures.
We get a fair bit, though some winters it seems like we get none. I love it. Thanks Esther.
You’re welcome! Fog is lovely to look at and experience if your bundled up but driving in it is something scary!
It can be scary, thankfully the fog doesn’t stick around for a long time here.

I always love the stillness that fog brings with it

Yeah it is amazing.
Enjoyed these !!! Fog is a reason to have a camera nearby…always 😆
That’s great Ted, oh yes, fog is definitely needed then, thank you. :S
I think fog works very well in black and white, and these are great examples! The reflection one top right messed with my head for a moment – I thought you’d posted a sideways view of a riverbank 🤣
I’m ‘double-dipping’ with Sunday Stills this week: https://www.toonsarah-travels.blog/gallery-flying-high-in-black-and-white/
I think so too Sarah, they are almost naturally monochrome images. That one confuses me too, I’ve had to do a double take a few times. Thank you Sarah.

Wow it’s been a while since I saw an image of a frog
Fog
I didn’t even notice.
Me too, looking forward to seeing more this year, thank you.
Beautiful shot
Thank you.
These are stunning! I think they might be my favourites thus far! There’s something otherworldly about them…I love a bit of fog and mist. Very peaceful and serene.
Thank you, that is really nice to hear. I know what you mean, fog is incredibly.
Gorgeously atmospheric. My own post will appear tomorrow, but only courtesy of pingback to you. Off and away again!
Thank you Margaret, that’s okay, I will see it in the reader I’m sure. Enjoy.
Love your foggy masterpieces!
That’s great Sandy, thank you.
Nice work.
Thank you Mike.
Quite a soleful collection. Very nice! I particularly like the last one! 😍
Thank you Elke, nice to hear which one you liked.
Love this collection of fog photos! You’ve really pulled up the important details, while leaving the misty texture of the fog in place. Very nicely done!
Thank you Sam. It can be hard not lose the fog, but good to hear you liked what I did.
Love that first image, and the one of what looks like the remains of old pier
Thank you Sue, the old pier was great.
Beautiful fog images. I would call them Beauty In Fog.
Thank you Anne, I like your description better.
