Monochrome Wednesday – Cosmos

Since we have been looking at so many macro shots it seemed like a good idea to use one of those for Monochrome Wednesday. This is a cosmos flower that I photographed at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.

Monochrome Wednesday – Cosmos

Cosmos flowers are so pretty. Well, they are. They have a delicacy to them that I love to try and capture with my camera. Especially the edges of the petals where there is a slight bit of colour.

I don’t grow them in my garden, but I might have to look into getting some. Recently I bought some seedlings, but they died before I had a chance to plant them. Unfortunate, but it is something that happens to me from time to time.

Looking at Leslie’s work from the other day it really inspired me to see what I could do with a flower in monochrome. They can be hard, especially bunches and trying to make it stand out more.

Monochrome Flowers

Flowers can be great subjects for black and white photography, no doubt. I don’t do many, and perhaps that is something I need to look at. As we saw with Leslie’s work you see a very different view of the image. The colour can be great, and I have enjoyed working with it. Do I want to do all black and white, I don’t think so, but I might need to start seeing what else I can do.

Joining in

It would be great if you would like to participate, especially if you are enjoying the monochrome challenge again. If you want to contribute there is a Facebook groupTPM Photos which you can join and share your images. Of course, if you are blogging no reason why you can’t post your own. I like this challenge and it is nice to be thinking in monochrome again.

  1. I liked your two examples here very much, sharp, high contrast and still delicate.
I like to shoot for a monochrome when I feel that shape and pattern tell me more than the colors do. Yet, I don’t think my skills in postprocessing are fine-tuned enough to display what I had in mind. I try including links to two of my attempts here (please do not hesitate to remove this part if you are against this).

    1. Thank you Bulent.
It is good to hear you like shooting them, and I think with practice you will find how to do exactly what you want. Just keep trying and learning and you will get there. Good luck.

    1. I think so too. We have flowers that grow as weeds up where my mother lives, but when they flower along the sides of the road it looks like fire, I love it.

  2. Hero shot! I love the painterly look, dark but contextual backgrounds and shallow DOF which makes your images pop.
