One Four Challenge – Sticks and stones at Arthur Creek Week 1

Here we go, another month and another image. This month I have decided to try something very different, not image wise, but with the processing. I nearly always use Photoshop to process my images, but recently I’ve been thinking that I might need to start looking at something else. Adobe are putting their prices up a lot and well I am worried I won’t be able to afford it for much longer so I need to start exploring other options right now.

So this month I’ve decided to do all my images with ON1 Photo RAW 2025. I have used ON1 on and off over the years, but I haven’t used it for a while. I spent yesterday and today relearning how to use it and then what all the new options are. There is a lot to learn.

Now before we go any further, this challenge is a nice one to push you with processing or thinking outside the box. If you want more information on this challenge or want to join us, you can find information here.

Let’s take a look at the image I have chosen for this month.

I had originally picked another image, but it had more problems in it than I could fix with my limited knowledge of ON1 so far. Maybe I can do it another time. So I quickly looked for another image and this is the one I settled on. It was taken in Tasmania last year at Arthur River. I thought it was amazing with all these logs that were lying around everywhere. We were told that they came from all the bushland and forest further up the river.

Part of the reason for picking this image was because it is a fairly simple image and I knew that I could do some things now with ON1. That isn’t to say that you can only do simple things, but when you are relatively new to software, it can take a while before you really start to get a handle on what you can do. Thankfully, they make lots and lots of videos so it is easy to find out what you can do.

This is the final image for Week 1.

I haven’t really done much to it. I did all the basic adjustments, and then I added the Effects Glow and from there the Diffuse Glow. I liked the softness it created. I did add a vignette and then lightened the middle of the image more. I used a layer to do that and then another layer to darken the sky more. That was pretty much it.

I’m happy with how it turned out, but I will have to do a lot more research and playing around before next weeks image. So much to learn. I will also try to write down what I do so you know what was done to the image.

I know that Joanne does this, plus I’ve done it before, and I think it will work with this image so here is a before and after.

I also have a gallery for you like I do each week and each week I will add to it.

  1. Hi Leanne, I really like your chosen image for this month and I’m glad you’re trying On1.
I like the final image this week. It brings the logs to the viewers attention.
I’m still trying to figure On1 myself and I’m still have issues with the black squares showing up on my images.
Much more learning to do. It could be my system.
I’m also trying Affinity Photo, which I’ve used way back.. it works like Photoshop and it’s not subscription.
Look forward to seeing your edit for next week.

    1. Thank you Robyn.
Yeah, I’ve used it in the past, but I have to relearn it now. I don’t know anything about black squares, I haven’t had that problem.
Yeah, I have to say I love that they provide lots of information on how to use it.
I downloaded a trial of Affinity and then forgot I had it and didn’t get to use it, so I don’t know.
Yeah, will see what I do next week.

  2. the effects looks nice and I’ve never heard of this new processing program, but then, I’d don’t use them so that makes sense

    1. Thank you Beth, they are a smaller company I think, but always trying to get better. Yeah, that would make sense why you haven’t heard of them, but you have now, lol

  3. Very nice, Leanne. I especially like how you brought out the sky some. I’m eager to see more of what you do to this. I used ON1. for a while; I can recall why I gave it up. I know that I switched to Capture One about the time I switched from Nikon to Fuji. I’ve since given that up and switched to Photoshop and Lightroom which I used years ago. I was happy to see what Adobe’s done with it. I use the photography bundle, but that ties you into a monthly subscription. I also use Luminar Neo a lot lately, which I’ve found is a good substitute for PS/LR. What I really like about your work is that you’re always learning, trying new things. Very creative.

    1. Thank you Joanne, it is going to be an interesting month. I had it a couple of years ago and struggled with it because it was so slow, and couldn’t really do RAW images, but it doesn’t seem to be a problem now. I have always used PS and Lr but I suspect they are going to be putting the price up so high that no one will be able to afford it unless you are a big business or make lots of money. I have it for at least the next year, so I want to try different programs and then see what I like the best so if I can’t afford Adobe anymore then I have options. YOu are right, I love learning new things and I like to push the envelope so to speak.

  4. Driftwood, so spare, so beautiful! Our neighbors down the street have adorned their creative, innovative gardens, shrubs, and various plantings with driftwood they’ve collected from local lakes and rivers. It looks really amazing!
