Normally, we only do this post for four weeks, hence why it is called the ONE FOUR Challenge. However, this month has 5 Thursdays, so Joanne and I have decided for this week we will do another version. So this is the extra week and I decided to go wild.
Once again I used ON1 Photo RAW 2025 for this image. I do think it is something I will do again and have some ideas for next month as well. I imagine the more I use it the more used to it I will get and be able to use it better.
Before we get started, for those of you who are interested in what the One Four Challenge is, you can find out by going to this link for more information.
Now that we have all that out of the way, let’s take a look at the original image.
It can be hard to do 4 different things to one image, but to do 5 can be even harder. I usually find week 4 a real struggle, but this month I’ve enjoyed each week and playing around with the image.
This week the image is pretty wild, like an apocalyptic type of thing. Think of the end of the world and everything is burning, well except all those logs, but the fire is coming. I just went for it, and I added some stuff that I would never normally do.
Here is the result.
Please don’t ask me what I did, because, well I did everything, almost. I did add a new sky, which was one of mine of a sunset I took years ago. I used one of my presets as well. I just kept trying things. I undid some stuff, added more, and it was a soupy fire of hell in the end.
One thing that is great about ON1 is that your original image is always safe, and anything you do to an image is non-destructive, so you can keep doing things. I pretty much used the same image, meaning I would reset it each week and start again. I like that option, not sure if LR or PS has that option. I’ve never looked.
Here is the before and after.
I have put together a gallery of them all for this month and would love to hear if you have a favourite. Now off to find the next image for June.
Your final image certainly looks like the end for the world Leanne! I’m a Lightroom user and it does have a reset button. It is also non-destructive. Just to be sure, you can always create a duplicate image and tuck it away. I never do, because the original is always on my computer.
Hahahaha, thank you Anne, the look I was going for. I know Adobe programs are like that, but I think there are others out there that aren’t, which is what ON1 refers to.
Love it!
Thank you Donna.

😁
This variation is great, Leanne. I like your sky treatment.
Thank you Joanne, it is pretty crazy.
How does ON1 compare to Lightroom/Photoshop?
Interesting question Popi. I don’t use Lightroom much, so I don’t know, but all the videos I have watched have said it is the best alternative to it. It does do layers, but somethings are not quite there. Then again Photoshop is getting worse as time goes on, more clicks to do things you used to be able to do with one. Other tools taking so long to do their job that I go and do something else while I wait, when I used to be able to have it done in real time. I don’t know if that answers your question, but they do offer a 30 day free trial period, so download it and see what you think. They also have lots and lots of training videos.
Yeah. PS is getting crazy. I think in trying to be the all in one solution, they’ve bitten off too much. I wait for it to process, too, and I have a hotrod rig since I was able to get it running again with the new DRAM. Sons who have spares are wicked good commodities. 😁 in fact, I have twice the RAM i used to.
I’ve wondered if it is because they charge so much money they have to keep making changes to justify the price, but they are messing it up. I have 36gb of RAM and I have trouble with it, I can’t imagine how badly it must run for others iwth less.
Also, I’m tired of the subscription prices.
Me too and I think they are going to start going up a heap.
I say, REVOLT! 😋 With everything costing more, these subscriptions are becoming more and more of a burden. But, I spent so much thought equity learning the Adobe brand, I’m hesitant to jump ship.
Hahhaa, I’m with you Popi. they are, we sat down recently and tried to work out how much money we spend a month on everything and it wasn’t good. They do add up. I have signed up and paid for a year of PS and it runs out in May next year. I expect when it does it will probably cost me double what it did this year. Not great. I don’t earn any money from my photography. So I am spending this year looking for alternatives. I quite like ON1 and I’m also playing with Affinity Photo 2. They are both meant to be quite good. Of course there will be things that don’t work exactly the same as PS, but it is also about finding ways around them. If you know PS you probably won’t have any trouble working out how to use the others, they are all pretty much the same, some differences. I know what you mean about the hesitation, sadly, I think many of us will be forced ot jump that ship because of price.
I tried Nikon’s editing package a while back. It was pretty clunky.
That doesn’t not surprise me at all.
PS: nice to have another photographer to chat with. 😉
I know what you mean, it is good.
I don’t know if I’ve said it, but I love how you use light. One day, I’m going to corner you into a discussion about how you get “that” look. It’s almost surreal at times. 🤔
Thank you, that is something I have worked many years to perfect. Good to hear that you like it.
