I’ve been trying to work out how to do more things with ON1 Photo RAW 2025 and while I was working on doing more presets with some photos from 2017 I thought why don’t I do one of them that I have done before, but do it differently.
In 2017 I was doing a trip along the Great Ocean Road and we spent some time one morning photographing the waves as they came to shore. They were big and rough, angry waves. I loved it, and it is something I would love to go back and do again one day. Trying to capture the water in that state and even getting a little bit of the movement. It’s not easy, but I love doing it. You kind of need to be side on to the waves to really do it.
The following black and white image I’ve shown before many times and it is one that I love. It has always reminded me of that scene in The Fellowship of the Ring when Arwen turns the rushing water into horses to take out the Ringwraiths. That way preventing them from crossing the river. There is a wildness to the waves.
The black and white means you really notice the waves a lot more. They are rushing forward.
I don’t think this needs to be changed, not from this one, but then I got thinking what if I reimagined the image and tried something with ON1.
I have been making my own presets, which I’ve told you before, but I’ve also been trying to do a series of Ocean Presets and so far I have 8 of them. They are all different in some way, and it is interesting to try them on different images and see what you can get.
For this image, I used one that I had made for a different image and this is what I got.
I do love the colours in this. I also think that doing it in colour takes a lot more focus off the waves, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just different.
I don’t think I have a favourite, and I like both of them but for different reasons. The first one is cold and angry, while the second is warm and doesn’t seem as angry.
I might try doing this more to see how different you can make an image. I know I do it for the One Four Challenge, but in a way that is different again. I hope you like posts like this.
Here is a gallery so you can click on them and get a bigger version with no distractions.
Speaking of presets in tomorrow’s post for Silent Sunday I will be showing more images from this day that have used the Presets that I have come up with from ON1.
Colour brings clarity and sharpness.
Interesting point, thank you.
I like the colour version too, Leanne. I think you’re spot on your assessment.
That’s great Sofia, thanks for letting me know. Thank you.
I love the sound of the ocean waves. You did it beautifully, Leanne
I do too Hazel, they are very calming. Thank you so much.
Oh wow that black and white edit is fire! You must print this for sure
Glad you like it, thank you.
I like what you have done here – very different
That’s great Nora, thank you.
That is amazing how much you can change an image to get a totally different feeling. I have just started using On1 Photo Raw, and so far I am impressed and amazed.
Thanks for the post, and thanks for the recommendation, Leanne.
Thank you Tim, it is really amazing what you can do with the software. That’s good to hear you are liking it, so much stuff you can do. I’m hoping to do some live videos of me using it soon. Just have to work out how.
You’re welcome and good to hear your thoughts.
Given your words, I can even ‘see’ the horses in your image rushing to take out the ringwraiths….
That is great Matt, good to hear I’m not the only one to see it. Thank you so much.
I vote for color this time! I like the way you handled the sky.
Fair enough Anne, and why not, thank you so much.
Color and monochrome versions are awesome!
Thank you Egidio.
❤️
Thanks Beth.
They are both fantastic photos but the black and white one makes the waves look more menacing. Which is a pretty great thing!
I thought it was interesting how you could have one image, but process them differently and they convey differently. Thank you Lois.
I also like the colours, and I think ON1 Photo is doing god job. It’s great that you are working on presets.
That’s great Ziggy, I think it is doing a good job as well. Yeah, I’m enjoying it, thank you Ziggy.
Wow, love the waves!!
Thank you, they turned out great.
