Some sights when you visit Healesville Sanctuary

I showed you some of the koala photos from my trip to Healesville a couple of weeks ago and I think it is time to show some other things that I took photos of.

Healesville Sanctuary is basically a zoo, but for Australian animals and birds. They do a lot of stuff with educating the public on conservation and how you can help. They also donate a lot of money to conservation as well. The Sanctuary is part of Melbourne Zoos and they do a lot to help the animals.

As we walked around I just took photos where I could. There were some things I couldn’t get because the habitats are designed for the animals and birds and not so you can see them. Sometimes you will go to one and you can’t see anything. That happened with the Tassie Devils, big area for them but not one in sight.

I will stop talking now and leave you with the images.

  1. I do like an animal sanctuary designed primarily to suit the animals rather than the visitors 🙂 Your photos are great – I love the echidna and all the birds in particular.

    1. I agree, and that is one thing I have always loved about Melbourne Zoos they don’t care if you see them, great if you do, but the habitats are for the animals, not for use to see them. Thank you so much Sarah, we have some great birds here. The echidna was good to see, I went back later on and it was hiding.

  2. I would assume it changed a lot. Apart from the variety of animals one can see, I remember very vividly, the calling cicadas as I was leaving the place. Once again thanks a lot.

    1. It probably has and maybe not, I don’t really know. I did go in the late 90s but I don’t remember much about it. Oh yes those noisy buggers are around there everywhere. lol
      You’re welcome Michael.

    1. It is a great one, especially to take tourists to visit, shame it is hard to get to from the city. You really have to drive there.

    1. The blue wings, they actually black but came out blue, that is a red tailed cockatoo, we don’t see them here much. I was surprised with the cockatoo in flight, couldn’t believe I managed to get a decent image, lol. Thank you Anne.

  3. These photos are beautiful, Leann. Question for you, though: Does that little hedgehog have something wrapped around his nose/mouth area? I cannot tell if that is his natural color or if something is there.
I really like the green bird photo–parrot?

    1. Thank you Lois, no it does have anything around its mouth, it is an echidna, or ant eater, so they are always digging into the dirt with their snouts, noses.
I wasn’t sure about the green bird, it is a rainbow lorikeet, but I really liked how it looked.
