Tales by Light

Recently on Netflix I saw a program that I think all photographers should see. The show is called Tales by Light, and is an Australian production, though the photographers are from all around the world. The show follows their adventures as they travel the world to get the photos they want. This is their motto.

Behind every powerful image is a powerful story

The show was produced with a partnership between Canon Australia and National Geographic. The photographers are all Canon users, but I don’t think that detracts from it at all.

You get to see some incredible parts of the world, and I have to admit I watched some episodes thinking, I want to go there, and others I was just in awe. I love the work of Peter Eastway, he has always been one of my photography heroes, so it was great to see him photographing the Antarctic and following in Shackleton’s footsteps.

You will see some photographers who do some extraordinary things, like swimming with sharks.

You can see the amazing gear they use, and how they use it. The show is what they call Branded Content, so it is to be expected in some ways.

The show takes you to many corners of the world, and looks atΒ a lot of landscapes and the people in them.

The photography is phenomenal, and I am so envious of many of these photographers.

The show is shot beautifully as well and I found it really engaging. There are now two seasons. The first one is 6 episodes and each one features a single photographer. The second season is also 6 episodes, though each of the three photographers has two episodes.

If you get a chance to watch this series I couldn’t recommend it enough. I know it is available on Netflix here in Australia, but I don’t know about overseas. Perhaps those of you who have Netflix in other countries can let us know if you can see it. According to Wikipedia you should be able to, but I don’t know if you have access to both seasons.

I look forward to hearing what you think of the show. My favourite episodes were Season 1, episodes 1 and 5 and in Season 2 episode 4.

  1. I love this show so much!! As a photographer, myself, I’m amazed at the remarkable experiences they have. I’m so envious! I particularly connected with the episode on the bears – mostly because I’ll be doing that very thing at the beginning of July! I would also love to get out to Africa and photograph the magnificent wildcats.

We’re in the middle of season 2. And that’s on Netflix in the States πŸ™‚

    1. I loved the second season Brianna, there is one episode I have watched many times. Wow, shooting bears, perhaps that isn’t the right way of saying it, lol. I am sure you will do great. I think a lot of people would like to go to Africa to do that, would be quite amazing.

  2. Thanks for the recommendation. Really awesome series with breathtaking photos

  3. These are incredible. I love NatGeo. They are working so hard to try to show people what we’re risking and losing.

  4. I got all the pictures and it made me yearn for those wonderful, unique places to take pictures. We haven’t gone on vacation in a while, so all our pictures are local. I am surprised at how many of my best pictures were taken away from home. We will have to go somewhere soon!

    1. I want to go to some of them as well Marilyn, maybe not swimming with the sharks, but I would love to go to Antarctic, that would be so amazing. I hope you get to go somewhere soon.

  5. Thanks for the inspiring write-up on Tales of Light, Leanne! I will check and see if we can watch this documentary here in Canada.

  6. It’s available on Netflix in the US as I just added it to my list thanks to your recommendation. I’m not a photographer but I love photography so I’m going to check out the series.

  7. Hey girl.. very cool post. FYI.. None of the links in your nav worked for me. Not sure if that is unique to me or in general but wanted to let you know. πŸ™‚
