Trying something new

For many years now I have resisted the idea of using a drone, but now I’m starting to wonder if I should give it a go.

My first thoughts were that a friend of my husband’s has one so why don’t I give his a try?

Drone Photography

Drones have been something that I never thought I would want to try. They can be so annoying and it seemed to be a fad that everyone was getting them.

I have found it really annoying when I’ve been out and they are flying around. They sound like mozzies and that is a sound most of us hate.

So why do I want to try using one?

Kind of a good question. I think it is because I have seen some videos where they put in a little drone footage and it looks good. I don’t like the ones where it is all drone stuff, but adding a little in here and there seems like fun.

So why not try it?

That is pretty much what I’m thinking at this point. I went to Williamstown the other day to meet Tony and take a look at what the drone can do. Unfortunately, he had forgotten the SD card for it, so we just played but couldn’t record anything on it.

On the way to Altona, we stopped at his house to get the card. When we were there he was able to record what the drone was doing and seeing, I guess you could say.

It was fun playing with it and seeing what was possible. I’m sure you have realised that this week’s video has footage from that.

You can see the video here, Getting a different POV on my Youtube channel.

Socialising with Photography

One thing I wanted to talk about here is how social photography can be. I’m sure I’ve talked about this before, but it is a very social thing for me. Often my only social outings all week are with people when we go out to take photos.

I spend a lot of time at home on my own. Well, my husband has been here as well, but he is working. So I am on my own a lot. Getting an opportunity to go and take photos with other people is great for me. Some weeks it is the only interaction I have with others.

I can go out on my own, but then I am spending more time on my alone. If I can talk someone into coming with me, then that is what I try to do.

What do you like to do?

Photos this week

I have some photos for you now. These are some of the ones I took while visiting Williamstown and Altona. There are some more in the video if you want to check that out. Getting a different POV

That is all for this week. I am working on a garden update but will give that in a separate post.

That’s all for this one, talk to you soon.

  1. I would love to try out some drone photography, just to see what I get. I’m usually in company when I take photos, especially street photos. But it is not often the company of other photographers. I liked the times when I was with other photographers, and I would like to do that more often. But I also like the times when I’m completely alone; I can do weird things then, without having to explain why.

    1. It is interesting to see the world from a different point of view I guess. Other photographers are so good to go out with, they understand when you need more time to take photos, or when you stop to take a photo they stop too. Hahaha. It is hard for me to push myself to go out on my own, but when I do I usually enjoy it, but given the choice, I like the company. Thank you.

  2. Good to hear you might give this a go. Have been using my drone more and love it for aerial photography and getting a different vantage point. Short flights, not above people to minimise the annoyance factor.

    1. Exactly, that is what I’ve been thinking Chris. I would love to take one out to the country areas, maybe up to my mum’s place. I can see the advantages, but you are right not around others. What drone did you get?
      Thank you.

    2. DJI Mavic Air – it’s small and has auto cinematic features. Compares well with bigger models. Worth buying a few extra batteries. I have two spares. Flight length is advertised as 25 mins but in reality it is more like 15-20 and once it’s close to running out of juice it lands! If you are flying it over water as I am most of the time you need to plan your flights and bring it back to land safely.

    3. There is so much to think about, I’m almost scared to use it, but I’ve been told that is pretty common. thank you Chris.

  3. Lovely photos. I do enjoy going out with photo buddies. It’s how I got through the worst of the pandemic. I sometimes have to force myself to go out alone and I do enjoy it too. But, I’d rather be with people. I think drones invade privacy.

    1. Thank you Anne. I am the same, you description of yourself pretty much describes me. I think drones can, but I think if I get one, I will only fly it around where there aren’t any people around, mainly because I know how much I find them annoying when there is one around me.

  4. I got involved with drones through my volunteer work and ended up buying one for myself. I got one with limited battery capacity because I didn’t want to haul around lots of heavy stuff in a big case. I don’t do videos, but add the drone images to my usual stills as appropriate.
I don’t use it as much as I thought I might, but when I do, it does add another dimension to my travel posts.

    1. Which one did you buy, that is something I’m looking at. I have to admit, that is the thing I’m wondering about, how much would I use it? Thank you for telling me that, good to know.

    2. I bought a Magic Air from DJI. The newest model that is similar is Magic Air 2. Rules for flying drones are tightening in the United States. Lots of places where they can no longer be used. Having said that, there are plenty of places where they are useful and legal here.

    3. They seem to be a popular choice of many. I don’t know, for me, I’m not sure my husband would let me get one at that price. The rules are tightening up here too. Though I don’t want to use it around people so hopefully that will mean that I will be fine. Thank you for that John.

    4. It is fun to launch and grab some images. I like to take a shot, rotate a bit, take another, then use Lightroom to merge into a panoramic image.

    5. I guess at this point I don’t have a lot of ideas of what I can do with a drone, but hopefully that will change. Sounds interesting what you are doing.

    6. As you get familiar and comfortable, the ideas will come. There is a lot of getting used to the tool, especially when it involves video. But the learning curve is fun. 😀

    7. I’m sure you are right. Well we are in lockdown now, so I won’t be able to get out with it in the near future. Thanks again.
