Weekend Wanderings: Parliament House Tours – Revisit

Looking back an older Weekend Wanderings post. It is one that I did just after doing a tour Parliament House. I hope you are okay with that, I haven’t been out much and when I have it has been for very specific photos. I need to just get out.

The Original Post

In Melbourne there is a gorgeous building at the top of Bourke Street and in Spring Street. It is one of the best examples of Victorian Architecture here. If you love architecture it should be a must on your ‘to see’ list. They do regular tours every day, well all the days that Parliament don’t sit, but they also do some special architecture tours.

Just over a week ago they had one so a friend and I decided to go. I’ve done it before, but it was when I had my old camera with the cropped sensor. Now that I have the Nikon D800 I knew the full frame would give really wide shots with the Nikon 14-28mm lens. I shot the whole building with that lens. You can’t take your bag with you, so you have to decide on one lens.

The tour was amazing, and with only four of us on it, it meant I could get photos a lot easier. Actually I was the only one on the tour that was taking photos. You get access to some great places that you wouldn’t see on the other tour. I loved it also because it is all about the building and what makes it special.

I’m going to put some captions under the photos, but if you really want to know about Parliament House then I suggest you do one of the tours that they have. For more information on them go to this link, Parliament House Architectural Tours. They are run once a month and you need to book, but they are free, so no excuse really. There are two more left for this year.

I will leave you with a gallery now. I hope you have some great things planned for the weekend. I think I am going to put my head down and get on with some writing. I really need to get ahead with that.

  1. It is quite cool when you get to go places on a tour otherwise you may not get to see. One time, on a gold mine tour with some relatives, since there was only five of us, we got to go to three different levels in the mine. Normally, the tour would take you to one level only. And, our tour guide, a former miner, also took us to points on the main tour level that he normally would not take a standard group to see.

    1. It is David, couldn’t agree more.It is great when that happens, when we did this tour there weren’t many of us, so we got to see more too. Thanks David.

  2. Great series. Leanne, I would like to use the photo of the parliament as a reference in my German blog Freie Abgeordnete (small size < 400 pixels with proper reference to you as an author and your blog) . The blog tries to promote the idea of independent representatives in parliaments instead of masses of party armies.

  3. Lovely revisiting the Parliament House post, Leanne. The building looks so grand on the outside, and very much so on the inside. Quite a few photos there you took, and it just goes to show how much there is to see inside.

Congrats on your book launch this week, and well done for moving your desk around at home (moving furniture and big things like computers take effort, lol 🙂 ). I do think that your photography is different than most – as I said before in another comment, there is a kind of boldness element to it. In your images, I think you make the subject stand out very well, macro shot or landscape shot. It is interesting being an artist…on one hand you want to be accepted and respected by fellow artist, but in a sense you also want to be distinct from your peers.

The Christmas decorations are up in the city and I am sure this is not surprising – they look the same like last year and the year before and the year before that. Great recycling :’D

    1. Oh yes, very much so Mabel, can always count on those that control our money to build nice buildings for themselves, lol

Thank you, the book launch went well, small but nice. Thank you for what you said about my work, I appreciate that. I do strive to experiment and challenge myself. I think in the end you have to be true to yourself, or it is never going to be rewarding.

Oh, I have seen some photos, it is disappointing, doesn’t make me want to come and photograph them, not when they are all the same.

  4. I like revisiting these. I haven’t been out either. It’s a disaster. I haven’t done a blog post in way too long. I hope we can both get motivated again!

    1. That’s great Nicci, I love that building, always amazes me how the people who control the money build themselves gorgeous buildings.
I hate not getting out, I did manage to get out yesterday, which was good. I can’t wait to get out more. Thank you Nicci.

    2. Funny, yes they do don’t they? I like the shot from the balcony, the colors are great. I’m laid up sick now. I should do a blog post with old photos today but I probably won’t. I want to do something great like go to Yosemite for photos with the snow. I hope I get over this darn cold soon. You’ve reminded me I could do something easier with nearby buildings especially with my new wide angle lens.

    3. Sad to hear you are sick, I have got a bit busy and am missing posts too, I need to find some sort of rhythm, and start doing posts in advance I think. That’s great, I think you do have to look for options close by at times. I”m going through some similar things now.
