As I said last week the place where most people do light trails is the opposite corner to Flinders Street Station. I’m sure if you go any night you will see photographers with their tripods set up to do light trails.
It helps that Flinders Street Station is one of those iconic buildings here in Melbourne. I remember someone telling me a story from when they were travelling overseas and how they saw a photo somewhere of it and she broke down in tears feeling homesick. It is the one building, I think, that says this is Melbourne.
So why do I like this one? I had to think a bit about that. I knew from last week that I was going to post a light trail shot from this location, but hadn’t decided exactly which one. When I really narrowed it down, I knew it had to be this one.
Most of my images of light trails were taken when it was dark, so you don’t get any kind of sky in them. I like this orange sky, though I suspect I made it that way. It was taken around sunset and you could get that colour then. I like to think all the colours compliment one another. It is almost like a monotone image, but it isn’t.
I think it goes without saying that it is a stacked image, but I don’t know how many images I used for it. I took this back in 2016, and I can’t remember that.
One thing I do remember with this was that I was going to take out the tram lines. Everywhere you take photos in Melbourne you will see the overhead tram lines. We have a vast network of trams and they go in and out of the city. I have at other times removed them and it can be a very long process. However, when I started doing it on this it didn’t look right. I actually like the tram lines and think they add to the light trails. The question would be, is it Flinders Street Station if you don’t see them?
This is my image of the light trails at sunset with Flinders Street Station in the background.
You can’t get images like this anymore as they have changed the way they light it up. I don’t like what they have done, so I don’t spend much time there anymore. I think it is weird. I also don’t like the colour they painted the building when they did the revamp. They said the colour they chose was more like the original, but I miss the warm yellow it was painted. Glad I took lots of images before that was done.
Tomorrow for Silent Sunday I will share some more light trails in this spot, or near it.
The header image is this image, but I cropped it so it would look different. I know some of you said you wanted a tutorial on photo stacking, and I thought I would look at the one that I wrote for Digital Photography School, but there has been a problem. I will share that another day.
A big yes for those tram lines! and for the near-monochrome…
Thank you Penny, I think the same, you need them.
I love the light trails!
Me too, thanks Marland.
You’re welcome!
Flinders is so photogenic in any light Leanne. Looks great with light trails and I think the tram lines enhance your shots. Cheers. Allan
It is very photogenic. You might enjoy the photos tomorrow. Thank you, glad you agree about the tram lines.
Leanne, I like the tram lines because that’s the way the scene was. Why do we need to take out lines that have meaning to the picture’s story? By the way, I also love the picture.
I think they are important in some images, but very annoying when you just want to photograph a building. We do what we have to with them. Thank you Anne.
Ha! I’ve never knowingly seen a photo of Flinders Street Station in my life, but these are dramatic and dynamic images.
You probably have Margaret, but perhaps not paid attention to it. I know it and I actually love it. Thank you so much.
Phwoar! Love these. I’ve been trying to capture light trails myself the last few days, but yours sh!t all over mine! I was just about to post some more, but after seeing these, i feel very self conscious
. Anyway, Melbs sure is a photogenic city. I’ve been enjoying your photos of the various architectural loveliness here. You’ve inspired me to make it my mission to get my hands on a real camera ( rather than just my crappy phone ) for next time I’m in this part of the world.
Thank you so much. I can’t even fanthom how to do light trails with your phone. Never even thought it was possible. Getting a good camera is a great think to do, opens you up to lots of different things.
