Early on Day 14 we went to the Moeraki Boulders and then onto Lake Tekapo during our New Zealand Wanderings. There were quite a few photos of the boulders, but for this post I am going to show you photos from Lake Tekapo.
New Zealand Wanderings Day 14 – Lake Tekapo
It was a very quick trip to Lake Tekapo today. We had planned on staying overnight, but when we got to where we were staying we found a massive fence around the hotel. There was a walkway to get to the reception area and then we were told that they were renovating. We would have to park around the back of hotel and haul our stuff quite a way to the room.
We had planned on eating at the restaurant, but that was closed. A second night with bad accommodation. Nope, we weren’t doing it. So we called the first hotel we stayed in when we got to Christchurch and asked for two rooms. Then it was a 3 hour drive for us.
Lake Tekapo
This place is famous for that Church, Church of the Good Shepherd. People go there to photograph it. I had heard that it is always swarming with people, but we were so surprised that there were only a couple of people there when we got there. It was so surprising. I managed to get a few shots, though we had to be quick because before we knew it lots of people were there.
We left the Church and headed to the lake to see what was there. It is so beautiful. The colour is incredible.
The plan had been to go back to the Church in the morning, but after seeing where we were going to stay for the night, well it wasn’t going to happen. I know that a lot of people love the Church, but if I’m honest, I was very underwhelmed. I have seen a lot of things in New Zealand that I thought were a lot better.

Here are a few photos from the couple of hours we spent there. We now have two days in Christchurch to explore. Can’t believe the trip is almost over.
I cannot say that I can see the allure of this particular church either but, of course, I am not seeing it in context and don’t know its significance. Your photos of the lake are terrific. The bright blue of the water against the darkness of the land forms is pleasing. That sucks that you had another crappy accommodation experience.
Yeah, I am not quite about it either. I don’t know that there is any context really. It is just something that everyone wants to photograph. It does sit on the side of the lake. I loved the lake. Yes, our crappy accommodation experience turned out great and we ended up at a hotel in Christchurch and that was good. I had a good nights sleep. Thanks again Laura.
Hi Leanne
Can I recommend if you go back to the Tekapo area either staying in twice or one of the high country stations. We stayed at a fantastic little cottage with easy access to several lakes and Mount cook. We travelled back and forth to Tekapo which was an easy drive
That sounds great Chris, though it will have to be another trip now. We are back home the day after tomorrow. The place sounds great. Thank you.
Looks like the weather is finally improving now that your trip is nearly over, nice shots as always!
It has been good on and off, really the only time the weather was a real pain was in Franz Josef and we couldn’t do the helicopter. All other times we have managed. Thank you Chris.
