I had a lovely morning on Sunday as I got up early and went to the Werribee Zoo where I toured the Savannah.
The zoo was offering a deal for members and at the price offered it was too good to miss.
I did a similar tour a few years ago and it was so good, so it was nice to be out there again.
We got to go to some behind-the-scenes places that you don’t normally see. Then we toured around in an open truck. I think they normally have 15 people on them, but there were only 8 on ours so we could move around well. We obviously couldn’t get off it, but we didn’t really need to.
One of the reasons I love these sorts of tours is that they take you very close to the animals. They do other safari-style tours but they stay on the tracks. We were going all over the place.
We had zookeeper Michael taking us around. He has been working there for a long time and was full of lots of information about the animals and how they take care of them.
I like that Melbourne Zoos have the Werribee one. Nice to know that animals from the main zoo can have time out there and in a place where they have a lot of room to roam around. The elephants will be going there soon which I think everyone thinks is fantastic. They have a bit of room at the Melbourne zoo, but they will have a lot more at Werribee.
The morning was gorgeous. There was a slight chill in the air but by the time we finished the chill was long gone and it was getting warm.
I love seeing the animals roaming around. You can take photos without the fences. It is almost like seeing them in the wild. Perhaps you can believe you really are on the Savanna in Africa, but the trees are all wrong.
I took lots of photos, but I’ve tried to narrow them down and have made a small selection. I hope you like them.
I also did some filming which may help you see what the area was like. I tried to get the animals moving around, but not sure how successful I was. It wasn’t always easy.

We just drove around on the back of the truck and saw some other the animals getting fed. It was fun. I have done another one, it might have been that, and I did prefer the other one. We went all over this place, where as this one just went to a few. I don’t know if I have explained it very well. Sorry.

Haven’t watched the video yet but the stills are so interesting. Does remind one a bit of African Safari films. I especially like the head of the ostrich. Looks like he is given you a quizzical look.
