Favourite Image Series – New York Skyline

A few weeks ago I showed you an image very similar to this and I want to share this one too. It is a much wider view of the skyline of Manhattan and  I love it too.

I think I might like the way I processed the other one slightly more than this, but I love that this one shows a lot more, also the new World Trade Centre building is here too. I think when I was there they were still building it, or finishing it up.

This was taken from the Staten Island Ferry as we were heading to see the Statue of Liberty. I’m told it is a good to see it without it costing you any money.

Here it is.

It was processed in much the same way. I did make the water look blurred and spent time trying to give it all a similar tone.

I have a small confession, okay maybe a big one. When I was in New York most of the places I wanted to see were because of movies. Like I wanted to go to the New York Public Library because that is where they ran to in the movie Day After Tomorrow. Then I had to take a photo from the mezzanine because that is where they stood when the water was running up the street to them. I got the shot, minus the water.

I wanted to go up the State Empire Building at night because of the movie Sleepless in Seattle. Go to Riverside Park because of You’ve Got Mail. So many places, and I can go on. I might put some of them up tomorrow for Silent Sunday to see if you can guess which movie I was inspired by.

So when I knew we were taking the Staten Island Ferry, well, all I could think about was the movie Working Girl and how it starts with the ferry as the characters are going to Manhattan to work. Then naturally all I could think about was the Carly Simon song, Let the River Run, which the movie starts with. I had it on my phone, I think it was and I put in headphones and I listened to that song on most of the ferry trip. It was epic.

I also got some nice images that have become some of my absolute favourites from that day. This is one of them.

In case you don’t know the song I found a link to it on YouTube and it has some of the scenes from the movie. Now was I crazy?

  1. I love the soft colours in that image 🙂 And I think lots of us are inspired to visit places we’ve seen in films, although for me the quintessential NYC films are those by Woody Allen – Annie Hall and Manhattan.

    1. Thank you Sarah, I think so too, I think movies are often our first contact, so to speak of these places. I have never seen any Woody Allen movies, never been a fan.

  2. Oh, I love this. The dramatic skyline; the colours…. and to be honest, I suspect that movies play a role in inspiring many people to visit not just NY, but many locations around the globe. ( Look how popular New Zealand got for a while there after the LOTR movies, for example). Thankyou for taking awesome photos on your travels- and then sharing them with us!

  3. Very nice pic of the skyline. You’ve probably been to more landmarks than the average New Yorker. When I traveled to the city to work, I loved shooting on the subway and in Central Park, or Columbus Circle. So many iconic sites to visit in the city.

    1. Thank you Jack. I don’t think so, I missed a lot. I did see those three things, we were staying near Columbus Circle and that is where we caught the train. OMG the subway is so confusing. I know there are things in Melbourne I’ve never been too, and don’t want to go. I think that is just what happens when you live somewhere, there is always later. lol

    1. Thank you Anne. The song is at the very beginning of the movie as the camera is twirling around the statue of liberty and then flies into the ferry where Tess gets her birthday cake.

  4. I think it is great to want to see places based on movies, Leanne! And to take them from the exact location that you saw on the big screen. Oh, yes!!

    1. Thank you Lois, good to know I’m not crazy. I didn’t always get to take them at the exact location, one yes, but most of the others were around the place.
