Monochrome Madness #31 – Night-time

Our host Elke from pictures imperfect blog this week wants us to look at NIGHT-TIME in monochrome. I think this is an interesting theme.

Night images are fantastic to get, but I have always thought they look great with lots of colours. So the idea of doing them in monochrome is interesting, especially to see if they work well with no colours for reference or whatnot.

Does it change the mood, or do you concentrate on something else? I’m curious to see what you think.

I know that I do a lot of images and make them look like night, but all of these, except one, were taken after dark. Though some were taken at sunset, and I hope that works too. the lights were turned on so you can see it is dark or getting dark. I even included a milky way image to see how it would convert.

Here is a gallery of my images.

Let’s thank Elke for being our host this week and I would ask everyone to go to her post to see what she has done. Don’t forget if you do the theme this week to link it back to Elke’s post.

If you want to participate then the instructions are below. I love it when people join us.

  1. All of the images look fantastic in black and white. I am surprised by how effective the lighthouse and milky way shot looks in monochrome. I think the impact of removing colour from night shots is that it concentrates the reader’s eye on the photographer’s handling of light and shadow and how these have been utilized within the composition.

    1. Thank you Laura, yeah it was surprising, I’ve never done an image like that in monochrome before, so it was a good opportunity to experiment. That is an interesting observation Laura, and I think you are absolutely right.

    1. Thank you Elke, you choose well. I am glad you like the lighthouse. The lighthouse doesn’t really give out that much light, not like a city.

  2. Amazing images. The one of the lighthouse is hypnotic.

Do you ever feel self-conscious when you are out with your camera? Especially at night? I always do whatever time of day, though when I’m focusing in on the subject I can get fully immersed.

    1. Thank you Paul, glad you like it.

I never feel self-conscious, though at night I can feel unsafe. It can be scary doing stuff at night on your own, especially being a woman. I have expensive gear, so that is a worry.

    2. Well whatever precautions you have been taking have obviously worked, so keep on using them. The things we do for our passions!

  3. Thanks for this Monochrome Madness post, Leanne. I have not shot black-and-white at night since my film days in the 1970s and 1980s. I am going to try it again. Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. You’re welcome Steven, though for clarification, these are all digital. I don’t do film at all anymore, no interest in it. I am very happy taking my digital files and converting them. Thank you.

  4. I think the Milky Way shot works particularly well – it may even be my favourite here! But I like the light trail a lot too and the reflections are great!

  5. I love black and white photos. I think it does change the mood, but I also think that you can see some details that you can’t when it is in color. When light is involved it makes the photos more interesting and dominant
