Sarah from Travel with Me is our host this week and she wanted the theme to be RUINS. When she first said this I thought Australia is not old enough for ruins, not like what you find in the rest of the world, especially Europe. How would I do this?
Then Sarah said Well it doesn’t have to be cathedrals or things like that. I decided to find out what the word means.
Definition of Ruins according to the Oxford Learner’s Dictionary:-
The parts of a building that remain after it has been destroyed or severely damaged
I decided that perhaps many of my abandoned photos would work as ruins as well. They are buildings or other things, that have been left and are now being destroyed, either by human hands or by nature, and this is what is left of them.
I’ve shown most of these before, though one is new. They are mostly old houses that time has forgotten. Some were left to make way for a dam, so it spends time underwater. Other homes have been left, possibly because they were too small, and new homes were built. There are churches that have been forgotten about by the people who went to them or because of natural disasters. I have even included some boats that are no longer used.
I have put together a selection for you here. I think this is the best I can find for ruins in Australia.
I imagine there are going to be a lot of amazing images this week, and I’m here for them.
Thank you so much, Sarah, for thinking of the theme and being our host this week. I do hope you will all go and see her post as well.
Participating in Monochrome Madness
If you would like to participate in this challenge, please post photos on your blog and use the tag Monochrome-Madness, then we can all use the reader to see what you post.
You can also leave a pingback, do they still call them that? Basically, you put a link to the host’s monochrome madness post in your post, and it leaves a link in the comment section.
Don’t forget to check out the Monochrome Madness page. On this page, the next theme is announced, and there is also all the information for participating. Please go and check it out. Click on the Monochrome Madness heading in the menu.
You captured the mood of the ruins in these photos, but then again that is your style
Thank you Ritva.
Wonderful collection Leanne …
Thank you Julie.
I love these!
Thank you.
Terrific, dramatic editing, Leanne. Great monochrome set.🙂
Thank you Jane.
Here is my post for this week:https://suejudd.com/2025/10/01/monochrome-madness-ruins/
What a fabulous and varied selection Leanne 😀 So good not to have all castles and ancient monuments but a bit of Australian rural life from the past
Thank you Brian, yeah no castles or monuments around me, so I couldn’t include those. 😁😁
Agree!
Thanks Geoff.

Perfect photos for the theme! I think abandoned barns are the best…they definitely fit the theme ruins!
Thank you Linda, I don’t think I have many of those.
Fantastic!
Thank you.
Great selections Leanne. And they look great in black and white.
Thank you Anne.
Although I instinctively think of ruins as “left over stones” your wooden ruins work really well.
I can see that, but the definition I found didn’t say anything about stones, so I went for it, lol. Thank you Elke.
I love the sepia farm house photo. You edit your photos so well, such a glorious moodiness to them
Thank you Alison, I love editing photos it is what makes me take photos.
Well done.
Thank you Dawn.
You see, you have got ruins! And jolly atmospheric too. I’ve scheduled my own post as we’re off to France early tomorrow. Hope the pingbacks work!
Thank you Margaret, though when I think of ruins I think of old cathedrals, stuff like that.
As you showed us, there are ruins in every age.
True Margaret.
These are definitely ruins Leanne, and very atmospheric shots! Thanks for joining in 🙂
Thank you Sarah, a bit different to yours.
Beautiful ruins, but especially that church. So sad that there is no one around to say, “Wait a minute. This can be rescued.”
Yeah, probably also because there is no money to do it. Thank you Lois.
Beautiful!
Thank you Merilee.
