I thought this month we might do something very different with the challenge. I hope it is something that you will like, and maybe even follow along with.
For this month, the base image I am going to use is the following. It was taken down at Sorrento a couple of months ago at the end of the day. It is the ferry that goes from Sorrento to Queenscliff across the bay.

This is the image straight out of the camera, and I think it is obvious that it needs some work.
I am once again using ON1 Photo Raw 2025 to do this. If you want to try and copy what I’m doing, if you don’t already have the software, then you can download a trial version of it for 30 days, which should be enough time for this challenge. You can get the download by clicking here, ON1 Photo Raw 2025.
For Week 1, all I have done is the basic edits to the image. You can see the sliders I used in the following screenshot.
I’m hoping it is a larger image so you can see what I have done. I did have to bump up the exposure quite a bit. I tried to bring out the shadows more, though you have to be so careful with the slider in ON1 because it is easy to go too far. I added more white and some black, but not much of the latter. I also added a little contrast.
Let’s look at the final image.
We now have our base image and we can work on it more and see how far we can go with the image from here.
That is all I am doing this week, and next week we can try some other things with it.
Now, if you want to join me in this challenge, then you just need to pick an image of something simple. I debated on giving the image to you if you want to join along. I can share a low-res image here, and if you want that I can add it to the bottom of this post. Though it will have to be a jpeg.
If you do join in then please add the tag One Four in your tags.
Or you can do your own image.
Here is the gallery with the images so far, and I will see you for the next one.

Good post
Good to hear, thank you.
so far, a great improvement
Thank you Beth, more to come.
This will be interesting to see what you do with this one!
I won’t be doing much to it because I was kind of hoping that others would do it with me and then show what they had done.
I have always like water, fog, and boats (or other structures). Somehow there is a feeling there. Will look through my files.
Me too, there is something about the combo. Thank you Jeff. If you can’t find one I’m happy to share mine if you want to do this challenge.
It’s a great idea and tutorial Leanne . But you know me ..
Thank you Margaret. Yeah I do, do you ever do any post processing, even just basic stuff to make the image better?
I used to watch the people in the photo developing place and they would go through each image and make adjustments too.
The lighter version is prettier in that you can see the image better, but I like that in both the line between sea and sky is barely discernable. That I like a lot. The image almost floats on the page.
Thank you Lois, I have to say I love that about the horizon line too, I love getting images like that.
