Water flowing in and out on a beach along the coast of Victoria

For Monochrome Madness recently, I did a crop that was like a panorama, and I thought I might play around with that crop again.

I found this image in my archives and decided to see what it would look like if I cropped it like that. It isn’t a 16:9, I tried that but didn’t like it, so I have no idea what this is. I wanted it thinner than the 16:9 crop would give me.

I have also been experimenting with ON1 Photo RAW 2026, and it has been a lot of fun. I do think I might have found an alternative to Photoshop with this latest edition. I’m still experimenting, but I am liking the results I’m getting.

  1. Love the final crop. It makes the composition – the shape of rocks and water swirls – more balanced within the frame.

    1. Thank you, and I agree, do what works for you.
I haven’t had any issues really, I find any new software comes with a learning curve, but maybe that is me.

    1. If your summer might be as predicted like mine, it’s going to be a hot one. I may get down there in the early morning if I can

    2. They said it was going to be a hot one, but they have said that before, time will tell. It is too far away for me to get down there really early sadly.

    1. Maybe you should try the trial version and see how it is Ted. I have to admit I’ve hardly used any Adobe stuff in the last month.

    2. I did try the software a few years ago but for some reason didn’t really like it. I must say that Lightroom integration with NIK, Topaz, and Filmpack is so seamless my workflow is great and easy.

I looked at an ON1 video the other night and the feature set looked to be what I need. The tutor is an Adobe Ambassador, but was very detailed and made the perfect point, a steep learning curve. That should not be a problem, but maybe I’m just getting lazy n my old age LOL.

    3. The software has got a lot better, I gave up on it a few years ago because it was too slow. You can get a lightroom plugin for ON1 too, though I’m trying to stay away from the Adobe programs, so I don’t know how it is.

I have a friend who has just gone to ON1 from Lightroom and she is really liking it. Google is great for working out how to do things that you don’t know, I’ve used it a lot. lol I get that, that maybe you don’t want to learn a new program, for me it is about Adobe getting to expensive and I don’t know if I will be able to afford it.

    4. Lightroom seems to bog down often. Since I use DxO NIK and Filmpack I thought their Photolab would fit great. They missed features until the new version. Their version 9 of Photolab had more updated features, but it’s so bad that it should not have been released, and it’s not getting better. I am done with that, so now it’s Lightroom and maybe the new On1 in the near future.

    5. Do you subscribe to Lr or own it outright? It is all sounding very complicated Ted, lol. If you give ON1 a go, let me know.

    6. I subscribe. I calculated I am probably paying 25% more a year over owning another editor. They all have major upgrades almost yearly, maybe every 18 months.

Also there is nothing more feature rich than Lightroom for photography. And in general works as advertised. DxO tried to keep up with LR, released Photolab 8, then 9 and at this point only a high end MAC runs PL9. Capture One can’t keep up either.

      So….

    7. I think the subscription has been worth it, but last year they put the price up to almost $25 a month here, I managed to get the old price if I did it for a year, but I am really worried that when my year is up they will want to charge me over $300 for the year, that is getting too much. The advantage to owning it is if you don’t want to upgrade, you can still use it, for as long as your computer will let you. Unlike the subscription, you stop paying, you stop getting access.

I have found so far that everything I can do in PS I can do in ON1, my friend has found the same from Lr to ON1. There are always going to be differences, but generally I’ve been really impressed with this latast release. I looked at Capture one and almost fell off my chair when I saw how expensive it was, lol.
