Giving the second chance photos a turn for Lens-Artists Challenge #382

This was an interesting challenge thisweek, set for us by Egidio from Through Brazilian Eyes, and not one I was sure I was going to do. That is not because I thought it was bad, but it did require more than just going through my archives. I knew if I were going to do it, I would need some time. Hence, I’m a day later than usual.

So if I’m right, you need to go through your archives and find photos that never made the cut in the first place. Then you have to do something with them and see if they work now. I hope I have that right. It was the second part I was having trouble with. It has been hot here, and I just wanted to veg out, not spend a ton of time on my computer processing stuff. In the end, I decided to just do it.

So instead of going through lots of photos, I limited myself to one folder of the city from 2022. I kind of knew what I wanted to do, and I picked 5 images, but in the end only processed 3.

Sorry, this is a long post, I didn’t think it would be, but hey, just look at the photos if you don’t want to read the post. I won’t mind.

I’m going to show the first image, or the reject.

This first image is a tunnel that goes under Flinders Street Station at one end. It hasn’t had any work done to it probably since it was built, besides the orange wall. It nearly always has tonnes of people, but this was a lucky time that I got to take a photo with no one.

I’m at the river end looking back towards the Elizabeth Street exit.

So I thought this was interesting, especially when I took it, but when I got it on the computer, I just thought it was too busy.

When this challenge came up, I thought it might be great to see if I could make it less busy.

The thing I wanted to try was to make it look like there was movement in the tunnel, so I played around with some blurring.

Here is the result.

On to the next one.

If you know me, you should be able to tell from looking at this image why I wouldn’t like it.

The sun is shining.

There is nothing I hate more, well almost, than taking photos on a bright sunny day. However, I do kind of like the composition.

This is a tram stop on Collins Street just outside of Southern Cross Station. I like how the road or tram lines go over the crest, and you can’t see them anymore. It is looking towards Docklands.

I decided to try the same thing as above.

I left only the tram tracks and road in focus. I was thinking it would give a look like a roller coaster. I don’t know.

I’ve photographed this building quite a bit, but this is not one of my favourite images of it.

I love the gold bits that jut out from the sides, and wanted to see if I could apply the same sort of thing to this image as I had to the others.

I added some motion blur as well, but just to the building. I’m not sure it worked as well.

I’ve been wanting to do more with motion blur, so maybe this will get me going.

Shall we look at the end result?

Are they perfect? No, but I’m okay with them as experiments, and I did actually learn a few things doing this. I might have to try out some more stuff, I think.

Thank you, Egidio, for our challenge this week. Not a hard one, but a time-consuming one. Thankfully, I was able to pick myself up and get my brain working to do it. I don’t know why really hot days are so draining, even with air conditioning. Can people who are in extreme cold tell me if the same things happen? I’m so tired at the moment.
