It is a free week and I think I like these because it can give you a chance to explore a topic you might not do otherwise. This whole challenge, Monochrome Madness, was started to get us all doing more monochrome images. Many of us, and that was me included tended to do just colour. So this challenge, once a week, made me try converting images and seeing what I could do in black and white, or with a tone over the top. I have found it good to do and it is something I enjoy doing each week.
I do try and do new conversions each week. Sometimes, the photos I might have already done in colour, but then I get an opportunity to try converting them to monochrome to see how they look. I have enjoyed seeing what everyone else does as well. People can be so clever, especially with the themes. I love seeing other people doing this each week.
Information on the next theme is near the end of the post.
As I said it is a free week and I saw a black and white photo last week and it got me thinking. It was a B&W of a city. I mean not a new concept, but I really liked the way it was processed, so I thought I might try doing my own. So I went through lots of city shots and found heaps of photos to use, and I did quite a few of them, but I’m only going to show you three today.
This is the first one. It has been shown before but in colour. Once I converted it I really liked the way it looked.
I tend to do images that have a lot of buildings in them and not just part of one, or a small group of them. I found this image in my folders and thought it would be a good one to try. What do you think?
Finally, I have an image of just one building, or rather the top of it. I see people doing ones like this a lot, but I haven’t really done them. I was going to do a black sky, but to be honest I didn’t like that, so I put in some clouds. I think this is very different for me.
Now there will be a gallery at the end so you can scroll through them and see them without all the distractions.
Next Theme
For the next theme, Monochrome Madness #31, Elke from pictures imperfect blog will be our host and she wants us to do monochrome NIGHTTIME photos. That should be a great theme for next week.
Participating in Monochrome Madness
If you would like to participate in this challenge please post photos on your blog and use the tag Monochrome-Madness, then we can all use the reader to see what you post.
You can also leave a pingback, do they still call them that? Basically, you put a link to the host’s monochrome madness post in your post and it leaves a link in the comment section.
Don’t forget to check out the Monochrome Madness page. On this page, the next theme is announced and there is also all the information for participating. Please go and check it out. Click on the Monochrome Madness heading in the menu.
I like your suggestion! Start small. That’s something I can do. Ok…I will do it. Thank you! Have a great weekend.
That’s great news, I hope you have a lot of success doing that start to love big buildings. Good luck.
Thank you for the encouragement!
You’re welcome.
Had fun again with this challenge

Good to hear Alison.
Your shots have lots of drama
I like the contrast between delicate wispy clouds and solid angular buildings!
As it’s a free week I processed some of my recent Philippines shots: https://www.toonsarah-travels.blog/gallery-monochrome-madness-seeing-the-philippines-in-black-and-white/
Thank you Sarah, you know I think you are onto something about the clouds and buildings.I tried doing one with no clouds and I just didn’t like it.
These are once again great, leaving this post inspired.
That’s great to hear Ritva, thank you.

Gotta love drama, thank you Graham.
Neat lines and angles..
Thank you PR.
Great images! I always liked black and white pictures because they allows us to focus on the object or subject without distractions. Your photos illustrate that focus and that intention very well!
Thank you Helena, I agree, monochrome is perfect for doing that.
Spectacular! Especially that last one. You inspired me to go urban as well, but with a very different vibe: https://margaret21.com/2025/03/26/exactly-a-year-ago-today-we-were-in/
Thank you Margaret, good to hear you liked them. I thought yours were great too.
Thank you!
Dear Leanne, as you explained, to change the photograph to the Monochrome is so exciting. As if (for me) the story of the photograph changes too.. As always fascinated your photographs, you are being inspiration for me too. Thank you so much, these are my challenge, Love, nia

Isn’t it Nia, I love doing it. Thank you so much and so glad I inspired you too.
I went down the architecture path as well Leanne, well sort of, not as new as your fabulous photos.

I’m sure it is great Brian, thank you.
These are fabulous photos of buildings! Nice perspectives.
Thank you Esther, I’m glad you like them, I enjoyed processing them.
You’re welcome! I need to try some building pictures. I get overwhelmed with the sheer size of them and my perspectives seem so bland that I don’t even try. I should give it another shot! Thanks for the motivation.
You should give it another try, why don’t you start by just doing some details, doors, windows, or something fancy on the building. Work up to the size of them. Buildings can have great shapes, and details.
These are fantastic.
Thank you Pepper.
Very nice and interesting the way you use contrast

Thank you Ted I’ve been playing with it a lot more.
a great marriage, monochrome really admires all those strong architectural lines and very nicelyu picks out negative space as well — love your choices
Thank you Penny, I agree about monochrome and architecture, they do work well together.
I like all of your conversions here. You’re right about the challenge encouraging people to try conversions they might not have attempted before. That’s certainly true for me
Thank you Steve, glad you like them. I am glad you joined us, I think it is a fun one to do.
I particularly like the second and last images, Leanne – quite bold photos
Thank you Sue, I’m glad you like them, I would like to try more like them.
These are stunning architectural shots, Leanne. I particularly like the last one, it looks very futuristic.
Thank you so much Elke, it was nice to try something new.
these look so futuristic in mono
Interesting observation Beth, thank you.
Nice post

Thank you Satyam.
I love Melbourne’s buildings and your photos of them.
Me too Anne, thank you.
