Fixing up something in an image that I never really liked

This is an image I took back in 2017, and it is one that I have always liked, except for the big white spot in the middle. I was there at St Kilda pier at sunrise, and I took this angle, one that not many others seem to do. Most people went at sunset and walked right out to the end of the rocks. I did that too once, and this Sunday I will put that image up for Silent Sunday.

As the sun was coming up I ended up with that massive white blob which I’ve never liked. You should always try to stop that from happening, but on this morning I couldn’t. I decided it was time to see if I could fix it.

So I set about to do that.

All I really did was add another sunrise image to the sky part that covered that white blob. As you can see below, I managed to do that.

I think it still works, and you can still tell that it was sunrise. I quite like how this turned out.

This is a shot you can’t get anymore, as they have changed the pier.

If you want to see the original post for the photo and more details about how it was taken, here is the link to that post: Photo: St Kilda Pier at Sunrise.

  1. This definitely works and is very effective. I like an edit that seems to recreate what you felt you saw and show it better than the original image, rather than one that radically alters an image to look nothing like what you saw, so using another sunrise to tint the white patch is perfect!

    1. Thank you Sarah, well you know I like both sorts of images, but I perhaps do images for different reasons. I think it works too.

  2. Having photographed the pier and kiosk many times, this was an angle I’d never attempted. I can’t imagine the spot where you were standing, but as you say, they’ve changed the area now.

To be honest I like the white spot. I never get up early enough to do a sunrise except when I lived in Abbotsford and the Spotted Turtle doves used to sit on my balcony fence and wake me up with their calls at dawn.

    1. I haven’t seen many people who have done this angle Vicki, and now you can’t. It was on the rocks at the back of the house thing there.

I don’t like how the spot becomes the main focus, I think with it gone you focus more on the structure there. I don’t get up much for sunrise anymore. I mean I wake up early, but I don’t leave the house. lol. Thank you Vicki.

  3. What a wonderful edit! You aced on that white blob correction. I’ll keep that in mind. Sometimes I clone sections of the sky to cover those blobs, but your solution seems better, as long as I have a similar sky.
