Influencing Me – Giorgio Morandi

Throughout any artists career there are artists that influence them, and then as time moves on that can shift. Giorgio Morandi is one of those artists and is a good artist to look at for today’s Influencing Me post.

Influencing Me – Giorgio Morandi

Morandi was a painter and printmaker. I have this from Wikipedia for you:

Giorgio Morandi (July 20, 1890 – June 18, 1964) was an Italian painter and printmaker who specialized in still life. His paintings are noted for their tonal subtlety in depicting apparently simple subjects, which were limited mainly to vases, bottles, bowls, flowers and landscapes.

When I was doing my fine arts degree I went through a period where everything I did was about jugs. I was told to look at Morandi’s work. My tutors thought I would get a lot from it and I did. I studied his work a lot. Borrowed books and looked him up on the internet.

For me, one of the things that I loved was how imperfect his work was. This is something really wonderful about how they are. At the end of the day, it is like we don’t always have to be perfect. Perhaps sometimes we should go for things that show something else.

Moving On

I haven’t worked with the jugs for a long time now. Most of them are still here. In the end, I think I ended up with over 30 of them.

Still life photography is a genre that I do rather like, but have to confess, I don’t think I’m very good at it. I try to put things together, but they never seem to look that good. Perhaps it is something I should give another go. Could be a good project for summer when it is too hard to get out. Will someone please remind me about it next summer?

I don’t really look at his work anymore. It was good to look at it back then, but today and now I’m looking at different artists.

I thought with these posts we could look at all the artists that have influenced me over the years. Maybe that is something you might like the idea of as well.

Gallery

Before I show you the gallery of some of his works, I have a short YouTube video to show you that I think actually shows his studio.

I hope you have enjoyed that and now here is a selection of some of his paintings and etchings.
