Lens-Artists Challenge #356 – Quiet Hours

“Quietly, I leave the house before dawn with my camera bag loaded and my tripod attached to destinations, who knows? It could be anywhere.”

This has been a familiar experience in my house over the last 30 odd years that I’ve been taking photos seriously. My favourite time of the day to go out has always been early morning. I love the peacefulness of it. When my children were small, I used to love waking up an hour or so before them so I could have some peace before the day got busy. I still enjoy that now.

With the challenge this week being QUIET HOURS from our guest host SH and his blog Stupidity Hole, I knew that I would be able to find lots of photos for it.

Would it be a surprise to find that I also love going out very early in the morning to see what I can capture? Get the stillness of the day before the madness starts. That often means capturing the sunrise. I don’t always get that, but I love it when I do. I think I have always preferred the sunrise to the sunset for the reasons of the quiet, there are not as many people around for the sunrise. I think the only sunrise I have been to that was packed with people was the one I saw at Uluru.

I have put together a gallery of some of the early morning and sunrise images that I have captured over the last 10 to 12 years.

My first thought when I saw the challenge was my city images, which I intended to do, but then I thought about fog. I love fog and there is something very quiet about it. You can be surrounded by it, and that blanket of mist makes you feel so alone in the world, like the only thing you can hear is your heartbeat. Obviously, you can still hear things, but it is strange and lonely and very quiet.

Here is a gallery of those early morning quiet hours in the fog.

Interesting challenge this one. As you can see, I decided not to share any of my city images. I felt these were better for those quiet hours of the theme.

Great challenge this week from SH from Stupidity Hole, and I hope you will all go and support him as the guest host this week. His link is at the beginning of this post.

  1. Love your photos of fog and mist. I also like the long exposures of water between rocks, such that the water appears foggy. Very nice!

  2. I really liked your first image and the one with a lot of rocks in the foreground (8479). Very peaceful images.

  3. Your city photos would also be perfect but I’m so glad you went for these. I always love the mood of your photos, Leanne.

  4. Wonderful images, Leanne. I too love those foggy morning scenes. I, however, can no longer get out to shoot those scenes so I appreciate those that share with us.

  5. So many wonderful sunrise images, and I agree that it is usually much more peaceful then than at sunset. But I’m especially drawn to your foggy images – I can really sense the stillness that fog creates around you. Wonderful shots for the theme!

  6. Beautiful gallery, Leanne! I love the pun in the first comment. >grin<
Even though I am an early riser, I'm afraid I miss many of the quiet hours out of doors, but it's the time I'm most productive at my computer writing and editing.

    1. Thank you John, you know I didn’t even notice the pun, complete accident.
I think I miss quite a few too, one thing to get up early, but can be another to actually leave the house.

  7. Gorgeous images Leanne, I love the quiet that fog brings and you’ve captured it beautifully 🩵 xxx

  8. Stunning images, Leanne. I thought that once I was older, I’d sleep less and get up earlier. Well, it hasn’t happened. I have great admiration for photographers like you who brave the early hours for the most beautiful soft light there is.

  9. I’m very much an early morning person too, so I love this wonderful collection of images. I wouldn’t have thought of including fog, but you’re quite right. It enhances solitude, in a good way.

  10. Leanne, all your images are so incredible. I especially liked the bare trees in fog and sunlit. They certainly evoke quiet!
