This is sort of an Influencing Me post, because the main reason I wanted to go and see Milford Sound was due to Trey Ratcliff. I saw him do a video on it a few years ago and thought I want to go there.
Milford Sound by Trey Ratcliff
When I think of Milford Sound it is hard to do it for me without thinking about Trey Ratcliff. It is because of him that I wanted to go. I guess that is the beauty of photography in this age. You can be influenced by others.
In his photos it looked like such an amazing place that when plans to go to New Zealand were starting to be made I was sure to say it had to be on the list. There was no way I was going to go to New Zealand and not see the place for myself.
Going through his website there are many photos of Milford Sound, but I couldn’t really find the one I was looking for. It was a few years ago. Still, he has many images that show you how beautiful it is. If I remember correctly he was living in New Zealand for a while, not sure that is still the case. However, it goes to show how you can get wonderful photos of a place when you are exposed to it many times.
Have you experienced something similar? Where a photographer has taken an image and made you want to travel to the place to get your own?
A do-over
If, that is a small word, but if I could go back I think I would try to spend a few days there. We were only there for one day. We drove there, took some photos around the bottom, did the boat cruise and then we left. It really wasn’t enough time.
If the opportunity ever arises again where I could go back, then I would stay there. We didn’t realise until after that you could get accommodation there. I would try and see if I could get different images at different times, plus different weather conditions. That would make it a lot better and give me lots of opportunities to get more images.
Gallery
Here is a small gallery of Trey’s images. If you want to see more of his work then take a look at his site, Stuck in Customs. He also provides lots of great tips for photography.
Gorgeous place – beautifully photographed!!
He has photographed it well Nora and it a truly spectacular place.
I am a fan of Trey Ratcliff. Your work is spectacular.
His work is, thank you Sherry.
I agree the type of tour you did is great to give you a taste of where you might like to spend more time. You were lucky to get the range of photos you did, but to capture different moods you need time.
Yes, it was a just a taste, there are many places I wouldn’t go back to and others I would have loved to have stuck around more.
You’re Milford Sound pics are great but as you say, you need to spend time there to get to know the place and hopefully get the atmospheric conditions you are after. Thanks for the intro to Trey Ratcliff, he certainly has some amazing pics of his travels.
Thank you Chris, yeah, I think you need to spend time at places to get the best photos. Maybe one day. You’re welcome, glad you like his work.
Those are absolutely stunning! Thanks for sharing them.
