This week Brian from Bushboy’s World is our host and the theme he has chosen is BACKLIT. I wasn’t sure about this one, but the more I thought about it the more images I thought of.
As photographers we are told not to shoot into the light, but sometimes it is the best thing to do, you can get some really interesting images when you do.
I’ve shown this next image a few times, but it is the best example of backlit that I have.

I’m going to repeat the story for this fountain because I love it.
I know some of you have probably heard it before, but you may have forgotten.
So we were taking photos of the fountain and looking at what we could do. As we were taking photos this guy came past and immediately I was on alert as the guy looked like bit roughI always am, he seemed like he was drunk or on something. I have to admit I am always a bit scared of people who drink, probably from having an abusive alcoholic father. I held back, but he talked a little and then started walking off.
He got a few steps then turned around to tell us how he got a really good shot there one night with his phone. So he got out his phone and showed us the photo. It was a good shot and he said he took it with the light behind the fountain. I knew I had to get that shot, so I went for it.
He was so right, it was a good place to take a photo. What do you think? Did he give us some good advice?
It seems to be the only one I have that was taken with lights and not the sun. I’ve been going through all my photos and I could only find others with the sun, but I think they will work. Here is a gallery of them.
As I said I hope these work for the theme.
I want to thank Brian for taking the lead this week and I hope you will go to his blog to check out what he did.
Participating in Monochrome Madness
If you would like to participate in this challenge, please post photos on your blog and use the tag Monochrome-Madness, then we can all use the reader to see what you post.
You can also leave a pingback, do they still call them that? Basically, you put a link to the host’s monochrome madness post in your post, and it leaves a link in the comment section.
Don’t forget to check out the Monochrome Madness page. On this page, the next theme is announced and there is also all the information for participating. Please go and check it out. Click on the Monochrome Madness heading in the menu.
The fountain shot is beautiful! The lights really stand out. That was good picture taking advice from that stranger.
Thank you Esther, lucky shot really. Yeah, I always laugh when I think about that guy.
Backlit… could not have asked for a better fit 😁😁
That’s nice of you to say Ted, thank you.
All beautiful. 😊
Thank you Pepper.
I am always impressed with your photography skills and style. These do not disappoint this time either. Here are mine https://sillarit.com/2025/08/06/capturing-depth-with-backlighting-in-photos/
Thank you Ritva. I am running way behind this week, computer problems, I will look soon.
Beautiful! Love the ones with the foggy effect.
Thank you Teresa, they were great to find.
You’ve got a much more varied diet than me here: https://margaret21.com/2025/08/06/backlighting-for-the-bold/
I’m sure you got a great collection Margaret.
Hello Leanne,
Wonderful and interesting pictures on the topic. I really like the 1st, 4th, 8th, and 9th.
Many greetings, Robert
Thank you Robert, love hearing which ones you liked.
I love the fountain. You did well Leanne.
Isn’t it funny that you wonder what you could have and suddenly you find lots of wonderful photos.
Misty mornings are great and are trees. I can never seem to get buildings that work well backlit.
My favourite is the trees and wire gate reflected in the water.
Thank you Brian, sorry I haven’t got to yours yet, seems Photoshop is doing a number on my laptop and I’ve been fixing problems all day.
That is such a pain Leanne. Hope all comes good later 🤞🏼
It seems to have, we reinstalled everything and it is working better. Thank goodness we tried that rather than listening to the Adobe guy saying I needed a new laptop. Took nearly all day, but I am back.
I hope you have a good back-up system in place now as well
Yeah I do, I spent about 5 hours moving all my files off it to the back up. So I can go back to that if I need images.
Great examples, Leanne. Beautiful photos.
Thank you Egidio.
the shots do look good and you never know where good advice will come from, and always good to be cautious
That is so true, I love that story. lol. thank you Beth.
All of these are really amazing, Leanne 🙂
Thank you Hammad.
I take photos into the sun!
Me too, I remember my mum always telling me to have the sun at my back, but it isn’t always best. Thank you Lynette.
Great shots, with a great tale to accompany it. I found this REALLY difficult, so I’m especially admiring of yours!
It is a hard one, so I understand Margaret, thank you.
Beautiful forest photos, Leanne. I adore the lake/pond with reflection. And I hadn’t even thought of leaves – but of course, yours are perfect for the challenge.
Here are my backlit photos: https://picturesimperfectblog.com/2025/08/05/the-devourer-of-light/
Thank you so Elke, the leaves were a lucky find in my archives.
