This week is a non theme one for monochrome madness and when I was trying to work out what to do for it I decided to get out in the garden. There are lots of flowers out there at the moment and I wanted to know how they would look in monochrome.
Flower photos in monochrome or black and white is something I’m never sure about. What flowers will work and what flowers won’t is the big question. So I have chosen mainly white flowers for this, but I think I need to experiment with other colours too. Some of these are pink, but they are still pale colours.
There is something about taking the colour away that makes you look more at the structure and textures of the flowers. I quite like them. What do you think?
Aletta from nowathome is our host next week. This is her first time and she has decided on the theme of STEPS OR STAIRS. It should be a fun one. Please make her feel welcome.

If you would like to participate in this challenge please post photos on your blog and use the tag Monochrome-Madness, then I can use the reader to see what you post.
You can also leave a pingback, do they still call them that? Basically, you put a link to my monochrome madness post in your post and it leaves a link in the comment section.
Don’t forget to check out the Monochrome Madness page. On this page, the next theme is announced and there is also all the information for participating. We have also included a list of themes that will be coming in the future so if you want to be able to plan ahead you can. They aren’t in order, but will happen. Please go and check it out. Click on the Monochrome Madness heading in the menu.
Also if you would like to host one week or more, let me know.
Love these!!
Thank you.
Beautiful shots. I always like the monochrome shots of flowers… It’s very challenging to deviate from the true beauty of flowers(which is colours and textures) to show a different pov.
Thank you, yeah, I’ve always liked them, but haven’t done much. I agree, it is hard to dismiss the colour.
This is a stunning set of images! There’s something about them that is giving me very vintage vibes ♥️
Thank you Rachel, that is interesting.
Love these! Sometimes I keep the subject color and put everything else in black and white.
Thank you Sharon, yes, I see others doing that too.
Excellent conversions, Leanne.
Thanks Dina.
Here’s mine – such fun creating all these images, instead of just changing the filter.

😀
I agree that removing the colour means that you focus more on other aspects of a flower’s beauty. I especially like the shot you’ve featured, and the rose bud 😀 I’m still away but have posted just one shot for this week: https://www.toonsarah-travels.blog/a-postcard-from-california-the-great-western-divide/
I’m glad you agree with me Sarah, thank you so much.
They all look excellent, love how your blur the background
Thank you Alison. I can’t take the credit for the blur sadly, that is all due to the macro lens.
Here is mine this week: https://wanderingteresa.com/flowers-in-monochrome/
These are so crips and elegant photos.
Thank you so much Ritva.
I admire monochrome flowers such as yours. They are gorgeous and pristine and elegant. But when it comes to me taking colour away from a flower – most often I don’t like to do it. It’s silly, I know, because I can keep both photos and yet …
However, I played around with a flower today, an orchid, actually. Or possibly it was a spider? Who knows?
It isn’t silly Elke, I find the same, I always look at my images when I do it and think I don’t like it. I need time sometimes to work out whether I like it or not. I certainly think some flowers work better than others. Thank you Elke, I will get to yours soon.
Lovely, Leanne.
Thank you Sofia.
Gorgeous!
Thank you Dawn.
I like finding the right flowers that look good in B&W. These work well Leanne.
I am doing a continuation of my finding reflections

Me too Brian, it can be hard, thank you Brian.
Love them! Especially the one at the top of the page.
Thank you so much RJ.
No matter how I try my monochrome flowers just are not that good. Nice, I’ll enjoy yours instead 😆
Interesting hearing you saying this Ted because I feel the same about my photos. I often think they don’t look good and can need months sometimes to come back and look and think yeah, okay I like them. 😯 Thank you Ted.
🤣🤣
I love flowers in black and white. It does bring out their details. The way you handle the lighting is superb. Beautiful post.
I agree Anne, it really does bring them out. Thank you Anne, you know how much I love playing with light.
Here in the UK, flowers are looking a bit drenched and end of season-ish. So seeing yours look so fresh and young is a treat.
I know that look Margaret, the end of the season is always sad. Thank you, my flowers are very new.
lucky you!
In 6 months I’ll be saying the same to you. lol.
It is strange, but I still look at the flowers and try to think what color they might be. The flowers from the back, like your header photo, are especially pretty. I never remember to look at them from behind!
Hahaha, I think I do too Lois. I often forget to take photos like that, and like you said they can be very pretty. Thank you Lois.
I agree, Leanne, removing the colour from some photos can greatly improve them. How do you make the background all black? ❤️
It can be a good thing to do though it has to be the right image. I just darken them John. Thank you.
I’ve never used Photoshop.. it’s so confusing.
I can understand that, I’ve been using it for years now, probably over 20.
Wow, you must be an expert!
I wouldn’t say an expert, but I’m happy with what I know.
What do you use for enhancing your photos, John?
