Floral Friday – Trying something different from the garden

Recently I purchased a small table to make it easier to do some table top photography, I guess you could call it. It is really nice and best of all easy to set up and fold up when done. I finally got around to setting it up today and taking some photos.

My plan this year is to do more still life and set-up photography. My tripod, camera and I are going to be working very closely together I think. There are things I want to try and since I like being home more than anything else, I plan on trying more of this photography. Over the years I have purchased things to do this and just haven’t really done much. I think the fact that I don’t think I’m very good at it really holds me back, but I need to push myself to get past that.

So I went out into the garden and picked some flowers and brought them inside to photograph. I tried doing a few things with them and here are some of the results.

This next image I am separating. I debated whether to show it or not. I wasn’t really sure about it. I don’t know if you have ever left hydrangea flowers on the plants, but after a while they go a different colour. Not sure what to make of it, but I left them there to see what they would be like if I photographed them.

I tried a few things, but in the end I went through my vases and found this one. I thought it would be perfect for this arrangement. Perhaps it is because I haven’t really done them like this before. I don’t know really. Perhaps images like this are something I need to experiment more with. I will leave you with this one for now. I need more time to think.

I don’t know if the reason I’m not sure about it is because it is a weird image, or if it is because it isn’t something I would normally do. Who knows.

  1. I generally prefer very simple vases either clear or in one single color so it doesn’t fight with the flowers. But then again, I’m not much of a flower arranger, either.

    1. I’m the same with vases Marilyn, and I didn’t even know I had that one until I went looking, it was in the back of the cupboard. I’m not much of one either, I think I suck at it. Thank you Marilyn.

  2. I love the hydrangea arrangement and the vase you’ve chosen.

Indoor arrangements are something I always think I should do, but not having a garden means no subjects (unless I buy flowers). Keep practising as I think it is well worth your time and if you have some lovely vases all the better.

I think the coneflowe(?) was a bit too close to the subject and I’d love to see this flower photographed again. It might be a hard shape to get the DOF right too.

    1. It has been good to get the positive comments about the hydrangeas Thank you.

Perhaps you could do more indoor photography with still life things and not flowers.I plan on doing that. I love that sort of thing too. I want to try replicating some of the things that the old master painters did.
Yeah, the rubeckia is probably too close, I was trying some things with my macro. Thank you Vicki.

  3. I love hydrangea when they turn a pale, almost papery beige color, at the end of their blooming season. They are a beautiful flower to photograph.

    1. They are amazing flowers, but I had no idea that they did that. I like them too. I have quite a few hydrandeas and think I will have to experiment more with them. Thenk you Lois.
