Things are changing here, and taking a look at my babies

I have been having trouble with my laptop. It is a good one, but it keeps overheating. Dave said that it is a problem with Windows and how it runs on my laptop. According to him if we don’t fix it the laptop could stop working completely.

I’m running Windows 10 and while I’ve tried Windows 11 I haven’t liked it and then reverted back. There are things I need and 11 doesn’t do them. I don’t want the taskbar on the bottom. I want it on the side and it disappear when I’m not using it. For the life of me I couldn’t work out how to move it in 11.

There are so many things I don’t like about Windows and I have made the decision to go back to using Linux.

Obviously I need Windows for Photoshop and a couple of other programs, but for most of my time I will use Linux. We are going to be installing a new SSD on the weekend and it will be sectioned off so I can switch between Windows and Linux. I can’t wait.

Windows never crashes anymore, but there are things that it does do that drive me mad. Overheating is one, and Dave seems to think the reason my battery doesn’t last has to do with it as well. I guess we will see. Should I mention here how much he hates Windows?

I may be out of action for the weekend, so I am scheduling some posts, but if you comment it might be a while before I can respond. Sorry, but I hope you won’t mind.

Of course, I have to leave you with some photos today, so here is a gallery of Ralph and Susie. They are our cats. We sort of inherited these from our eldest daughter. She got Susie in 2017, I think it was. When she went overseas at the end of 2018 Susie came here and just never left.

We have had Ralph for 2 years. She moved into a new place and he didn’t like being there on his own all the time, so she said, can he come here just for a week? Well, he never went back.

My other daughter has two male cats and the two of us send photos of our cats to each other all the time with Messenger. So I went through and found some that I had sent her and now I’m going to show you lots of photos of them. Susie is the black and white tiny cat and Ralph is the larger tabby cat. I hope you enjoy the photos.

  1. splendid post! any post with cats is by definition a winner… and even if your upper-case-W Windows is driving you mad, your lower-case-w windows nicely showcase the cats. All good!

    1. You’re welcome Rudi, I thought it would be fun to do a post on them. Well I wouldn’t go that far, neither of them like to be picked up or cuddled. Sadly. Thank you.

  2. What beautiful cats you have. I remember when I had lots of cats. Whenever someone had a spare cat, I seemed to wind up with it. For a while that was true of dogs, too. We are down to just one dog, no cats, and I worry about him ALL the time.

About Windows. I do use 11 and mostly what’s wrong with it is they have moved so many controls — mind you all the old controls are still there, but hiding — it can be really hard to find what you are looking for. I do find it, eventually and my computer no longer overheats.

Unix is a better system. I worked on a unix system for years until the business I was in because so dominated by Windows, I had no choice but to change. I also ran a dual system with a Mac, but the price of having two operating systems ended that. In any case, I’m not a Mac fan and I do NOT find it easier to use than windows.

I have thought about Unix but I’ve worked on dual control systems before and there were a lot of problems. Maybe I didn’t have enough memory or speed, but I was never where I needed to be. Fortunately, Windows did away with their dual system. Mac still hasn’t decided what their system actually IS.

I’ll be most interested in how this works out for you. I am dubious about running two operating systems on one computer unless that computer has a hell of a lot more power than my computer — and this one has 32GB of RAM and the fasted Intel chip they were making when I bought this two years ago. It was also the most ram I could stuff into a laptop at the time. There ARE physical limitations using such small, light machines, but there’s no way I’m going back to a desktop. I’m totally hooked on being able to lift my computer with one hand.

I’ll be waiting for future reports. Pity Photoshop doesn’t run on Unix, isn’t it? I would be running Unix if Photoshop ran on it.

    1. We love them, but we had planned on not getting any more cats after Tiddles died, but our daughter changed that. So we will have them for quite a few more years. Ralph is the younger and is only 4 years old.

We are finding it hard to navigate, 11 that is. My laptop is still overheating, so time will tell.

My laptop won’t be dual control, it will be dual login. So when I login I have to decide if I want to linux or windows. Then if I want to change I will have to log out and log back in. I’ve had computers like that before and it isn’t hard and this laptop is way more powerful than previous ones. It shouldn’t be an issue. The biggest problem will be listening to Dave swearing as he tried to get Windows to work. lol

Sure I will let everyone know how it all goes. Thank you Marilyn.

  3. I had a perfect,y good laptop, updated and Windows 11 made it completely unusable. So…bought a new laptop. Plenty of power. It’s horrid. In a previous life I owned an IT company. I have gone nerd again out of curiosity.

Results are pointing another direction. Adobe. Keeping tech talk to a minimum, their programs don’t play well with others. I also use various DxO programs. All run fine, interact with each other, and non-DxO software. Use Lightroom or Photoshop with the others system memory disappears, functions lag, etc. Common issue is around Abobe.

Nothing masks or filters like Adobe products, so…. Reboot

    1. That does not sound good Ted. Dave is a programmer so I let him do all the computer stuff.
Yeah, it is annoying how Adobe won’t do Photoshop for Linux, would make life a lot easier. The plan is to section the SSD so I will have dual login, so I can log into Windows when I want to work on photos and then use Linux for everything else. I have done that before.
Yep you are right, if I could find something else that worked as well as the Adobe stuff I would use it.
      Thank you Ted.

  4. Dear Leanne
oh dear, it’s nerve racking when the computer does not run as it should. All our computers are Macs therefore we can’t help.
    Sweet cat pictures.
Good luck with your computer, we keep our fingers crossed for you.

    🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

    1. It is, and annoying. I’m not allowed to have a Mac, Dave would divorce me, he hates them.
Thank you, I’m sure it would all work out.

  5. I hope you get things how you like them with the computer.
I liked seeing the kitty photos! Both are so cute. Cats sure do love boxes, don’t they! 🙂

    1. So do I, I’m sure it will get sorted.
We love our cats, they are so cute. I have a friend who has a kitten and she doesn’t like boxes, so weird. Thank you.

  6. I couldn’t stand dealing with Windows. I am an Apple girl all the way. I know – it’s like a cult – but the stuff just works. No muss, no fuss, and all of my devices happily talk to each other. Plus the OS runs my On1RAW software and other stuff really well. I wish you luck with the updates.

    1. My husband would divorce me if I got an Apple. He is a programmer and hates Apple with a passion. He says they are way overpriced with your get. So it won’t be happening here. So Linux, from what I remember is so good, no virus’s and it never crashes, not that Windows really does that anymore. It just works well. Thank you Ceci.

    1. Yeah, that isn’t going to happen. My laptop was so expensive and I haven’t had it that long so I am not getting a new one. We put a new SSD in it and it will be big enough to section the disk so I can have a dual login for Windows or Linux. Fingers crossed that works.

  7. I love windows 11. I would ask Microsoft to remote in to fix the OS. Need to wipe it and create a new profile. I used to build computers and can guess at some of the the issues. Apps are now built to run on 11. That’s part of the problem. Most developers no longer accommodate 10. There are countless tutorials to help you do what you want in Windows 11.

    1. I’ve tried it a couple of times, but haven’t liked it much so switched back. I’m stuck with it now. Unfortunately the laptop is still overheating. We have tried eveything we can think of. So no idea. I will have to see what tutorials I can find. Thank you Sherry.

  8. Just a thought, but have you vacuumed your laptop? If the cats roam around it, there might be a buildup of cat hair causing it to run hot.

    1. Yeah, we have done that. My laptop has been opened up so many time recently. We thought it might be the same thing too. I have 11 on it now and it is still overheating. Sadly.

  9. Oh, Leanne–Susie and Ralph are so cute. Susie sleeping the box…all spread out as she is, is so funny. And so very catlike. I love these.

    1. Thnak you Lois, they are cute. She is funny, she will sleep in the box, but won’t sleep in any of the beds we have got for her. Glad you loved them.

  10. I hate Windows too. I have a laptop for photo editing software, but my primary machine, my desktop, is a Debian machine.

    1. Yeah being able to get away from windows is not a bad thing. I think Dave is going to section my hard drive, or SSD so I can switch between them. Fingers crossed it all works.
