Trying more food photography

Do you know what one of the biggest problems with doing food photography?

Yep, you need food for it.

I suppose you could buy it, but we are basically stuck at home so that is a bit hard. The only thing to do is make my own, so that is what I did.

Pancakes anyone

I make some fluffy pancakes to take photos of.

I have been making my own plates and bowls from clay and modelling clay. I think I spoke about it last time. They are ready now to use so I wanted to try some in some food photography.

I made the pancakes and used some backdrops I have to set up my food to photograph.

I also videoed it and if you want to see how I set it up take a look at my latest YouTube video, Experimenting, gardening and Susie.

I’ve sort of struggled with this a bit. What do I show, what will people want to see, but you know what? I think I just have to do what I want.

I love the garden and think it should be part of it, so there is a garden update. I love photography, so there is some photography there as well. I had to include some footage of Susie too because Klara keeps asking me to.

It is fun and I find it gives me something to focus on. We are stuck at home, still in lockdown and I can’t say I am sorry about it. I think the safest place right now is home, so doing things around the house really suits me. You know, I love being home. I really am a homebody.

So I am going to show you a few of the photos from my food photography. Not sure I am getting any better, but there you are.

Take care everyone. Get vaccinated and make the world a safer place.

  1. those pictures are AMAZING! and the food looks delicious too haha what kind of camera do you use for such crisp pictures?

  2. I like how the background really pops out the highlighting of the main object. Also, I like how the pancakes were freshly made recently before the shot was taken.

  3. The dark background always highlights the food as the important subject so there is no distraction. I thought I used a filter or an app once to photograph a gooseberry and it turned out so well, but can’t remember how I did it. What is your technique, Leanne?

    1. I hadn’t thought of it like that, I just love the dark backdrops. I hate it when that happens, when you can’t remember. There is nothing special about what I did beyond using natural light and almost black backdrops. I’ve done a couple of videos that show how I took them. They are on my YouTube channel.

    1. Thank you, yes we are all fine and so is our house. It was more the shock of it, I’ve never felt an earthquake before. Slight movement, but nothing like that. It was so surreal.
For it being a magnitude 5.9 it did very little damage anywhere. I think everyone is shocked about that.

  4. Your food looks so yummy and the lighting is so good. I suppose you have special lamps and things, I always find lighting tricky since I just use windows and sometimes the ceiling lights.

    1. Thank you, but no special lamps I just use natural light. I use a diffuser to make the light softer but that is about all. I never use ceiling lights, the light is too yellow for me.

  5. Your food photography is wonderful, Leanne. Pancakes….yes, please! I really like the one with powdered sugar scattered outside the plate–very pretty. Your cat is just like me–no photos, please! Good to see you back here, Leanne.

    1. Thank you Lois, yes to pancakes always, lol. I love the same one Lois, by far my favourite. She can be a pain when you are trying to capture here, she will be looking at me and as soon as I point the camera at her, she turns away. It is nice to be back.

  6. Dear Leanne,
pancakes and strawberries and blueberries – yummy – beautifully arranged and fine photographed.
    Wishing you a wonderful week

  7. Always do what you love… because I learn from what you share. Love how your food photography came out. Now I’m going to check out YouTube.

    1. That is a great philosophy and one I’m trying to pay attention to more as I get older. Thank you, and I hope you like the videos.
